quote:PORTLAND, Ore. - A new report ranks Oregon's ability to house its homeless population each night as the second worst in the country.
The yearly report released this week comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It is ranking Oregon 49th out of all 50 states based on the percentage of our homeless population forced to sleep outside.
Oregon clocking in at 60 percent. The only state worse off is California with 66 percent of its homeless sleeping unsheltered.
One woman who's been homeless since she was a teenager said this should worry us all.
"You're just one bad mistake from being where I am," said Misty Shaw, homeless. "I've been trying to do as much I can to get back on my feet and I'm almost there."
But, Portland officials argue that we as a state are doing better than you would think.
This Oregon statistic is based on numbers from early 2015 and more shelters have since opened up.

Calif and Oregon have a very High percentage of Homeless. To say we rank at the bottom. Does not really say anything. How many homeless are there in other states, I would bet less. So the number they need to house to get their numbers down would also be less.

i met a lot of homeless people in saint louis in my time, not one of them wanted to work, they like there way of life with no responsibility , sure there are exceptions that need help but more that dont want it
Its gotten so bad that to use the Biking and Running trail in the city are done at your own risk. You could get jumped or stuck by a needle laying around.
grumpy is gonna take 2, and Dads3040 want 8. Its the least you can do for 'brothers'.
I have a hard and fast rule:
Do Not feed the seagulls. They do Not appreciate it. They will Not leave.
In all seriousness, we have created a moral hazard, by removing so many of the consequences of poor behavior and choices.
For example, the news reported that the 20-something Delicate Snowflake arrested for causing $250,000 damage to cars during a recent protest was a repeat criminal...and was getting hundreds of dollars of food stamps per month. My son goes to work every day and works his * off trying to get ahead...and the taxes he pays are being used to support thieves, druggies, whores, and other assorted scumbags?
What message are we sending?

I have plenty of work to be done around here and if they don't like it its a long way back to town. Don't have to worry about any of them taking me up on it.
We have them around here in the summer, but by now it gets pretty dang cold and they head back to the valley or someplace a little more temperate.
That is why the population is so high here. The Temp and that is why one of the worst states is Calif. Temperate climates. We have not really had a cold year in a few.
