Leaving on Aug 5th. It will be my little girls very first plane ride.

Anything cool to do there, besides looking at the scenery on the beach[:p](with dark shades on so the wife doesnt know where Im looking, of coarse)?

I was there last in 1990 on a weeekend pass while I was in the service....but Im sure a lot has changed since then.

Going up to see the Battleship North Carolina is already on the list.....anything else cool like that around?

I was stationed at MBAFB in 1990-91 and my youngest son was born there. A calabash in restaurant row (http://www.myrtlebeachscrestaurants.com/Restaurant-Row.html) is always a treat and for wings Fat Jacks (http://fatjackswings.com/) used to be the place to hang out, IIRC, it was owned by a retired USAF guy.

    Enjoy!

you have a pretty good ride up to Wilmington to see the battleship. While your up there take her to the Fort Fisher Aquarium south of Kure Beach, she will love it. You may as well hit the Kure Beach pier too.....[:)]

I remember my 1st plane ride. It was in 1981 at Ft Benning. I was in a C130 with 64 other guys and we were making our 1st Jump onto Fryer DZ. I flew in an Airplane 4 more times but never landed in one. It was a heck of a ride for North GA Hillbilly.

I hope ya'll have a good time in Myrtle Beach and she has a good flight.

Drunken Jacks was a nice restaurant down by Murrells Inlet. Its a little spendy but it was nice place inside, beautiful ocean view and good food.

Simply... There's a lot of good stuff at Myrtle Beach...

But with the good, comes the bad...

Traffic on Ocean Drive can be horrendous...
And watch for knuckle heads... They abound EVERYWHERE.
Keep you hand on your wallet when out in public...
And the best eateries aren't necessarily the easiest to get to.

Plenty to do in Myrtle Beach without having to drive an hour and a half to Wilmington.

First and foremost, you have the beach and ocean itself. As you mentioned, the scenery is fine! I spend most of my daylight hours on the beach and in the ocean. If you like to fish, go to one of the piers and try your luck or book a trip to do a little gulf stream fishing. The Banana Boat rides and para-sailing are great fun, too.

For shopping/entertainment try Broadway at the Beach, Barefoot Landing, The Market Common, the malls (Coastal Grand and Myrtle Beach Mall...Bass Pro Shop there), the Tanger Outlet Malls, and don't forget all the specialty shops in and along Highway 17. Down in Myrtle Beach proper, along Ocean Blvd., you have the SkyWheel and Family Kingdom amusement park for the kids. Plenty of entertainment options for the whole family.

For dining, Restaurant Row is overrated...don't be afraid to go off the beaten path for a good meal. If you want good seafood head north to Calabash, just across the NC/SC line, or head south the Murrell's Inlet...BTW, there's a nice little gun shop with an indoor range and gun rentals as you turn off of HWY 17 heading into Murrell's Inlet. The Sea Captain's House on the 30th block of N. Ocean Blvd in MB is excellent!! If you want something other than seafood, there are plenty of options as well...American, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Brazilian, etc...you name, it can be found on the Grand Strand.

I could seriously write pages on places to go and things to do on the Grand Strand. If you have any specific questions, ask, I can probably give you some good advice.

Shilo...I find Drunken Jacks to be overrated. Small portions, inflated prices, and the food isn't/wasn't very good the two times I went. Went the first time to try it and was disappointed, went again thinking they had a bad night but experienced the same thing the second time, too. But, as they say, your mileage may vary. BTW, which RV park do you stay at?

That's why we go in Sept after school starts, after Sept 15 and the rates drop.

We stay at the Myrtle Beach Travel Park. My wife's been going there ever since she was a little kid.

We had a good experience at Drunken Jacks, but we went off season and earlier in the day so it wasn't busy. One place we thought was terrible was the Spring House Family Restaurant. Everytime we drove by it was packed so we thought we'd try it and we were not impressed.

Fish feeding at Bass Pro shop, over in Conway (a few miles away) eat at River Bistro, outstanding and priced easy.
Obviously golf, beach, Ripley's, Strip, Strip clubs, shopping at Tanger, Barefoot Landing, or Broadway at the beach.
Go down to Murrrells Inlet on the strip tons of seafood restaurants.
Drive down to Brookgreen gardens and take the side street to the marina on the water Wassasumthin and drink and eat on the slow side of the intercoastal waterway. Legends in Surfside, North Myrtle good eats, Thourobreds or Italian Rossi's ( get the lobster bites)
Apach pier for fishing, drive down to Charleston, go to the Knight dinner thing or the other Dinner show thing ( can't remember it) Take in a show at the house of Blues.
    Drink Drink Drink
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

One thing to be wary of are any of the "Smorgasbord" seafood buffets...

Highly over rated and over priced for what you actually get...

Yes, I know exactly where it is. My aunt and uncle own a condo at the Arcadian just down from the RV park.

My two trips to Drunken Jacks were at different times and different years, once in early August and the second time in late August. But like you, I have friends that absolutely love the place.

As for Spring House, I've never eaten dinner there but their breakfast is very good. When we stay in Windy Hill, we eat there just about every morning. Even when we stay in Cherry Grove, we still make a trip or two down for breakfast. BTW, one of my favorite places for breakfast is the Golden Griddle up on Main St. in NMB. Owned by a former West Virginian.

Like you, I enjoy going after the busy season too. Late August, early September are the best times...crowds gone, weather still good, ocean still warm, prices are much better.

In particular Captain Bennett's Calabash Seafood Buffet on Restaurant Row...sometimes you get more than you pay for and it ruins your vacation...
