Cinco de Mayo was created by the American beer companies in the mid 80's (As I recall Corona was behind most of it) The "holiday" actually commemorate the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.
I was working in Mexico City back in the 90's at a Sherman Williams plant and realized tomorrow was May 5th. I asked one of the other engineers if we had to work tomorrow. He looked at me like I was crazy. They had never even heard of it. So yes we had to work.
Unlike kwanza which is 100% made up at least Cinco de Mayo has a historical event tied to it, but it is no doubt a manufactured holiday designed to sell beer, chips, salsa and tequilla.
Irony...it's not just how the well water tastes. [8D]
(I'm glad you like my "irony" line, Dads. Use it in good health, my friend.)
Nah, you're not so bad, BSR. And there is no such thing as hell, anyway.

I should remember to give a hat tip every time I use it, Rocky. I chuckle just reading it. [^]
