IRS Letter

For 40 plus years I've filed my taxes. Had to pay some years and gotten returns other years. Haven't moved from this address for 39 years. Their letter was asking me to come in for a meeting to verify that I am whom I say I am. Bring a utility bill with my name and address, drivers licence or passport. Last 2 years of Income Tax Returns. The letter said this is a way to stop fraud. They wouldn't send my tax return until I complied. Made an appointment to go. Earliest appointment was 28 days later. The wife and I went last week. The IRS contractor looked at all my paperwork, compared my returns with what was in their records. And deemed me as me. About my return, it will take up to 6 weeks to get it. Has anyone else gotten a letter to appear?[:)]

No I didn't have any troubles. Filed taxes the 2nd week of Feb. I wondered why my refund didn't come back to my Checking account. Then I got the letter. Advised me to call IRS at their 800#. Had to schedule an appointment with them'[:)] for the id session, Strange!

Be certain to list all your expenses incurred while complying with their "request" on next year's return. Including fuel, mileage, lost wages, missed profit, suit rental, parking fees, meals (only half the ticket), and cellular minutes used.
I'm always suspicious when some alphabet agency requests a sit-down.

That sounds like a real pain in the *. But nothing compared to having someone steal your identity. At least they checked to make sure you are you and now you can rest easy knowing you are you for a little while [:D]

Keep the receipts, maybe a deduction next year? Suffer any pain in your lower extremities, emotional pain and/or suffering requiring a doctor's visit ?

They are just checking to see that the return filed in your name, for a refund, was actually filed by you not some crook. I bet you would be a bit more upset if you found out that your big refund check went to somebody else.

I have had to do this the last 2 years!! they claim it is because our payroll account at work was hacked. Have had no identity theft I know of yet but our company monitors it for free for 3 years.

Simple. Under withhold. Get a interest free loan from them instead of giving one.

I formed a software company in 1980. By 82 it was making big profits. Got in to a non-payment dispute with a crook, but he was "connected" with CT and NYC political types.

Sudden Corp and personal audit happened in 82. At my house, we worked there. Our CPA met them and requested we not appear at all.

Two days. They found nothing except asking me to declare about 2000 more miles usage of the company car.

That cost maybe $90 in new tax. The IRS wasted four - agent- days, my CPA charged $5000, which is like $20,000 in today's money.

That works for only a small amount. Over their set limit, they charge a penalty. [xx(]
I got an IRS letter one year informing me I had done my taxes wrong and was due an even bigger refund than I had calculated. Nice. [:D]
