The night I arrived at the Reception Center on Ft. Polk, La, we were met by all kinds of lights and cameras...seems ole Cassius Clay was supposed to report and they thought he might've been on the bus.

He became a Muslim and the rest is history.........

He and his wife moved back here to Louisville, his home town, a couple of years ago. Occasionally you will see him around town or at his museum. He is very polite and kind and he loves kids.

And he is a draft dodger, period.

My sister works at the Childrens Hospital in DC and Ali came to visit the kids. He visited EVERY kid there. One child was in rehab and returned to his room finding he had missed the boxer. My sister went to the elevator, down to the lobby, found Ali, told him the story, and he went back up to the kids room and talked with him too. Draft doger or not, that was nice. On the other hand, Hillary Clinton only visited selected kids, she didn't want to see the worst. Sis said the Bushes were the best for visiting the kids.

I'm not sure I agree with what Ali did when he was drafted -- BUT -- I do have respect for him standing up and accepting the consequences of his action. He didn't run off to Canada or get any special deferments, he was willing to go to jail for his beliefs.

As long as he was able to do, he talked. When he was no longer able to do, he stopped talking. Seems he always did what he said he would do. Lots of folks aren't like that.

There was a time when the man was hard to understand...

In the long run. He has left his mark.

I have great respect for the man though I didn't always believe in his politics.

He could have served in the military and been in the rear with the gear. But he chose prison over going to fight in that piece of crap war. He gave up the prime of his professional career to stand by his beliefs, and he did it right - not by running, but by abiding by the system and going to jail.

He was the G.O.A.T. - a man who walked the walk for his beliefs. America needs more like him now...

I was young when he was boxing and didn't care much for him as a boxer. A few years ago they showed reruns of a lot of his bouts and after watching them the man was good. There hasn't been anybody since with the talent he had in his prime. Most of the time he made it look easy.

Like others, I disagreed with his decision to refuse induction. But, also I admire him for sticking to his principles and accepting the consequences. Most others ran and hid. He refused to Puzzy out. He basically said, "Here are my beliefs and I will honor them." Christian or Muslim, how many of you guys would actually go to prison for your beliefs? Most would hold out as long as possible and then cave. He didn't.
