Eight firing squads of 13 shooters sounds a bit much when one round in the cranium vault would have made them just as dead but would have been lacking in pomp and circumstance.

Do not trust anything the Indonesian justice system says.

The drug trade in Indonesia is thick with police and army. It is protected by judges and prosecutors. This is why it is rare for any drug smuggler of importance is given more than light punishment. But they will execute an unwilling mule forced to carry drugs under threat to family or children.

Low level and forced labor gets arrested and punished harshly. The message to these people is clear, if they rat they die. But the king pins are safe.

Provides the global image of being tough while keeping the profits flowing.

Now that is an effective execution method. We should invite the Indonesian Firing Squads here to clear our nations death row.

    I like the method.

Hate the dishonest, lying, murderous scum who do not care about guilt or innocence. They will kill anyone that threatens the drug trade. They will kill any victim that makes trouble for the drug trade.

There is a 9th person sentenced to die who was to be shot with the eight just killed. The scum in charge of the courts and prosecutors are suddenly in a tough spot. Seems that the real criminals have now confessed. So the murder of this person has been put on hold.

Now the judges and prosecutors are pissed off. They have to figure out how to murder the victim who ratted out the drug lords while still getting the international press they want for pretending to be tough on drug lords.

Australia should have sent in their special forces to raid the prison and take their people out of there.

no they not have, they knew before they decided to go drug smuggling what the penalty would be if they were caught! indonesia is a poop hole full of corruption, but their law allows for death for drugs.
the australian politicians caused them to be shot by interferring and there was no way the indonesian government was going to loose face and save them!

Countries like Indonesia and Thailand do not keep it a secret that the penalties are harsh for narcotics trafficking. According to the article, one of those convicted had about six pounds of heroin in her luggage. Even in regions like Bulgaria where heroin is cheap, six pounds of smack is worth over a million bucks and no one is going to move that amount of dope unless they were "assured" that they'd get through customs on the other side. Some kingpin didn't pay off the right officials and a small fry will take a bullet. Oh well.

You play the game and you run the risks; on both ends. If you are caught, you'll do a long prison stretch or be executed. If you decide to save your own *, start talking and double cross your bosses, you'll not only be dead, but so will your family. There is more money to be made moving narcotics than in any other substance on this planet and these guys play for keeps.

I know guys who got extremely rich trafficking heroin, but even more who are dead.

What people here are not coming to terms with is that Indonesia does not care if you voluntarily smuggle drugs or if you did it under threat to you or your family. This happens, people who were not involved have been forced, under threat of being murdered, to smuggle drugs.

Something goes wrong, maybe it's a random complete search or a bribe didn't get to whomever. But the forced mule gets caught.

Some of these forced mules have cooperated with authorities. Helped to set up stings on the real gangsters. For their obvious status as pawns and for their help in catching the real bad guys, Indonesia will shoot them and let the drug lords off easy.

It's not about stopping the drug trade. It's about punishing anyone who rats or fails to make a delivery.

I like the idea of executing drug lords and drug smugglers. I do not like leaving that option being available to a criminal organization pretending to be a national justice system.
