I appreciate that Lynch told the truth as best she knew it. She never fired a shot, she couldn't have. She was crushed and knocked out early on. When she was able she assigned all heroics and fighting to her fellow soldiers.

Best guesses point to Sgt. Donald Walters who did the fighting the Army claimed for Lynch. Investigation of the scene suggests he fired about 200 rounds but he either ran out of ammo or out of functional guns. Finally overrun and taken prisoner. Only to be murdered by Iraqi irregulars.

What pisses me off is the Army never owned up to the fabrication effort or who cooked it up.

Remember this well. Jessica told the true story the first time she was interviewed and then had to keep quiet. The news media went into a hero frenzy until she wrote a truthful book and then was forgotten. Best I can remember, as she told it, the real hero was a soldier who left his truck attacking the enemy with a rifle that had to be single loaded for each shot.Don't recall what happened to him but I remember in his picture he looked more like a computer nerd than a movie star hero. Always thought this was why his heroics were ignored.

Donald Ralph Walters (September 16, 1969 - March 23, 2003) was a United States Army Quartermaster Corps Sergeant, officially listed as killed in action in southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah on March 23, 2003 in the same ambush in which Jessica Lynch was captured. He was awarded the Silver Star for his gallantry during the attack.
