    It has been proposed since the Carter administration and was almost accomplished during Reagan's first term. The plan was to roll the ATF into either US Customs or The Secret Service. Thanks to the Patriot Act and forum hero GW (I can hear the applause and the screams of troll and liberal directed those few who dare not to applaud), the BATF was moved from the Treasury Department and into the Department of Justice. Once at the DOJ it was mixed in with the United States Marshals Service (USMS), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) National Institute of Corrections, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and going nowhere...Except to a bigger budget.

    A lost opportunity which will never come around again.
