SELMA, AL (RNN) - President Barack Obama signed HR 431 into law on Saturday while aboard Air Force One, awarding Congressional Gold Medals to those who marched in Selma in 1965
Obama was flying to Selma, AL, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the "Bloody Sunday" marches that took place on March 7, 1965.
The foot soldiers who marched across Selma's Edmund Pettus Bridge were met with violence and brutality that galvanized a nationwide movement and led to the passage of of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Marchers returned two days later on March 9, 1965, to march again in what has been referred to as "Turnaround Tuesday." This march was not marred with the same violence as "Bloody Sunday."
Later in March 1965, another march from Selma to the steps of the Alabama Capitol Building in Montgomery, AL, was completed. This march, like those before it, called for equal voting rights.
Citing the First Amendment, a Montgomery-area judge had ruled on March 17 that the marchers were allowed to march without restrictions.
The final trek from Selma to Montgomery lasted from March 21 to March 25 and signified a victory for the civil rights movement. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law less than five months later, on Aug. 6, 1965.
All of those marchers have been recognized with the passage of HR 431.

There's a long list of recipients:

Examples:
do we get a gold metal when oboma the blamer gets gone? according to T.S. uncle albert, its already 6 years late.
Yes. If you can convince 115 conservatives and 188 liberals in Congress to vote you a medal, odds are good whoever is President will sign off on it.
Let us all know how that goes for you! [:)]
And he showed no respect to Chris Kyle
If you are not black he shows no respect to the military.
But while Selma might have transformed America, in many ways time has stood still in this community of 20,000 that was at the center of the push that culminated with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Dallas County, of which Selma is the county seat, was the poorest county in Alabama last year. Selma has an unemployment rate of 10.2%; the national rate is 5.5%.
More than 40% of families and 67% of children in the county live below the poverty line. The violent crime rate is five times the state average. The Birmingham News called the region, known as the Black Belt because of its rich soil, "Alabama's Third World."
So much for the change. How many years have they had to improve their situation.
And he showed no respect to Chris Kyle
Who respects a liar? I know I do not.
obama or Kyle?
Did I interpret your post incorrectly?
Who in your mind's eye is the liar?

Chris Kyle was whom I referred to in my response.
