Just purchased a Winchester 1890. Barrel shows 22 long. Finding it difficult to find 22 long ammo. Plenty of 22 lr. My question is, will 22 short, chamber and fire ok or not. Thanks.

    While shorts can be fired in it, odds are it will double feed from the magazine.

    I'd say try shorts. If anything use it as a single shot until you find a supply of longs.
    Also, make sure you clean the chamber after shooting shorts. The residue left could cause problems with chambering and extracting longs.

    The .22 long is the .22LR case with a shorter 29 grain bullet.

    The remington subsonic and the CCI Velocitor are 2 that have shorter oal.

    Try to find some .22LR 's with a short/lite bullet and try them out.

    The 4th from the left is the long, same as the LR case, #5. {22 mag is last and totally different round}

    No the 1890 was case specific. only longs will work unless you shot it single shot.

    Cranky is correct. My first rifle was a model 1890 and I put thousands of rounds of LR, but longs, shorts or anything shorter than a LR is a load it one round at a time, not thru the tube feed magazine, in thru the top of the rifle.

    WikiArms is a good search tool to find where ammo is in stock and what the price is. Here's .22 Long:

    I just remembered that you can use the tube mag as long as you only load one round of a shorter 22 than a long.

    You can shoot Shorts by single loading directly into the chamber. A little hard to do on an 1890; don't pull the slide all the way back and the elevator won't be up in the way.

    If it is poor condition, consider having a 1906 / 62 elevator with the universal cutoff installed. Then you can shoot Short, Long, and Long Rifle without adjustment. Accuracy won't be too good, though, as the rifling twist is correct for Longs.

    Take the eraser off a pencil and cut it so its length and a 22 short equal the length of a 22 long. put the eraser into the elevator of the rifle and it will feed shorts all day long.

    I found 22 longs at Academy Sports. Not online, but my local store had 26 boxes.

    Just for the heck of mentioning it, let's not forget one other 22 rimfire round ... the .22WRF which was introduced for the Winchester 1890.

    Also loaded by Remington as the .22 Remington Special.

    The .22WMR came later, an extended case version of the .22WRF. You can shoot the .22WRF in any .22WMR gun and CCI does still make the round. Often cheaper than .22WMR too. I have a bunch of it from finding a goodly amount on sale once.

    Just never try to do the reverse and put a .22WMR in a .22WRF gun, such as an 1890 Winchester. Not going to be a happy day.
