Robber picked the wrong Waffle House to go waving a gun around and demanding money in [:D]

This just intensifies my disbelief that, in a theater with 70 patrons, not a single one of them had a firearm.
Waffle House has had several armed robberies in the Atlanta Metro lately. Hopefully this was the last.

More responsible, law abiding people having skill with firearms and carrying them everywhere they go would be a very good thing.
Rebuilding the mental hospitals we once had in this country would prevent many situations where anyone would need to pull a gun in defense of self or others.
We need both, the latter much more urgently than the former.

In red above.
There have been shootings of late where the folks pulling the trigger should have been undergoing some form of therapy, but it is a stretch to think that they would have been hospitalized at any point prior to the shootings.
It is heartbreaking to see folks on the street that are obviously struggling with severe mental illness. Are you suggesting there is evidence that, in general, they are a significant threat to anyone but themselves?

No, I'm not. The vast majority of the mentally ill are no danger to anyone.
We used to have a robust system in this country where the mentally ill could be evaluated, decisions on them being a danger or not made. Facilities existed to treat or contain the dangerous.
There were terrible abuses.
About 40 years ago most of that was torn apart. The mentally ill tossed onto the streets, into the prisons, into family homes. We "solved" the abuses by mostly eradicating the systems and declaring it all a success. Liberals could cheer over defending the rights of the mentally ill. Conservatives could cheer over saving all those tax dollars.
What I'm saying is we should have fixed it, not tore it up and tossed it. The need was never going to go away simply because victory was declared.
