Looks like I will be relocating to Colorado Springs in a few months. Anyone from the area have any tips on the area?

Looks like some good opportunities for shooting, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Pretty stoked - will be my first time living back near the mountains in over a decade. [:p]

Poor Richard's close to downtown Colorado Springs had some real fine pizza back 1997-1998 when I lived there. I see the place is still there.

Manitou Springs is nearby. Lot of tourist trap shops but The Mountain Man was worth checking out. Take a look:

If you elk hunt start applying for area 61,,,,,,,,,,it'll take a few years for that area but it's 'primo' hunting. Eastern Co. has excellent Mule, Whitetail deer and Antelope hunting.

The Olympic shooters train in the Spgs.,,,,,,,,,,they use to have 'days' the public could visit.

Haven't really gotten into the regs yet, but I'm probably out of luck on the draw hunts (will only be there about 2 years). Are all big game tags by draw, or is there anything you can just hunt straight up with a regular license/tags? Looks like lots of public land - is it pretty accessible? I'm used to areas where the public land is TERRIBLE.

Everyone should take the Cog Railroad to the top of Pike's Peak at least once:

You can do the round-trip, should at least once. But there's another option I liked much more.

You buy a space available ticket. Then ride up to Mountain View Siding. That's at 10,000'. From there it's an easy hike over to Barr Camp, which is on the trail to Pike's Peak. Took that route many times. Gets you above the day hikers on the lower trails, up into the higher country real quick.

Some people get dropped at Mountain View, do a picnic and get picked up by the train on the way down. It all has to be planned though, it's not like flagging down a taxi or thumbing a ride.

I'd spend a night at Barr Camp, buy a meal and a bunk to sleep in. Breakfast in the morning then hit the trail to some part of the mountain I hadn't been before. A day or three later drop by again on my way off the mountain. Would leave a beater of a car at the trail head down by the Cog Rail Road station, no one ever touched it.

Good times on that mountain, I surely do miss it these days.
