Rabbits Continue Winning Season

Saturday we hunted for 8 hours. Rabbits 1; hunters 0. Sunday: No hunting in New Jersey. Monday: My back was out; Tuesday: Back still out.
Wednesday: Decided on new tactic. You can hunt all day and rabbits may only emerge at dusk. They are "crepuscular" (look it uo, I had to!) Just after dinner, I jumped into the truck with our Labrador Dandy and the old blunderbuss, around 6 PM. I blasted away from suburbia, rocketing up to almost 90 mph on interstate 80. I was averaging 50mph up state road 15.
The sun had set by the time I reached the horrible Italian restaurant which marks our turn off 206. As twillight disolved into darkness I pulled into the state game land where we had once seen a rabbit convention at that hour. Nothing, not even a tweety bird. It was past legal shooting time. I got out of the truck, loaded the blunderbuss anyway and let Dandy out of her crate. Like a dog marking its turf I took a leak. We meandered 50 yards up the trail. The promised thunderstorm was no where in sight, the gale force winds were yet to be represented by even a mild breeze. A few crickets sang, the frowning, starless brow of the horizon, the rich night air and its frosting of dew told of early autumn. There would be many mild hunting days to come before the snow. We got back into the truck and as I headed for home, my thoughts turned to a piece of forbidden cake and a cup of coffee at the diner. It stands at the crossroads of rural life and the endless expanse of manurbia beyond. The waitress was a comforting, older woman, certainly someone's grandmother. She assured me that the carrot cake was her favorite, that it was very good, and she was right.

Hoping to hear of a Rarebit, or a Hassenpfeffer, Soon!
One of the most important things to do before loading a gun to go hunting.
