"These bayonets were called "Rosalie" by the French Poilus in honor of the Virgin of the Southern French town of Bayonne where supposedly bayonets were first used in 1655. The legend is that during the mid-17th century irregular military conflicts of rural France, the peasants of the Southern French town of Bayonne, who were Basques, having run out of powder and shot, rammed their long-bladed hunting knives into the muzzles of their muskets to fashion impromptu spears and, by necessity, created the Ba?onnette".
English translation:

Rosalie, it is your history
That we sing with your glory
- Pours with drinking! -
While emptying our cans
Thus let us drink!

Rosalie is so pretty
That the gallant ones of Rosalie
- Pours with drinking! -
Are at least two, three million
Thus let us drink!

Rosalie is elegant
Its dress-sleeve sticking
- Pours with drinking! -
The rev?t until the quillon
Thus let us drink!

But it is irresistible
When it emerges, terrible,
- Pours with drinking! -
Very naked: bayonet? one!
Thus let us drink!

Under the light sky of France
Good sun of Hope
- Pours with drinking! -
The merry ray would be said
Thus let us drink!

She adores to enter in dance
When, to give rate
- Pours with drinking! -
With been a prelude to the gun
Thus let us drink!

The hammer of which it takes care
Be carried out with the step of load
- Pours with drinking! -
With drums and bugles
Thus let us drink!

With the mitan of the battle
It bores and pricks and cuts
- Pours with drinking! -
Avoid at the head and points thoroughly
Thus let us drink!

And is necessary to see the rout
Guys of Lembourg and Bade
- Pours with drinking! -
The Bavarian ones, the Saxon ones
Thus let us drink!

Rosalie nails them in plain
They had it, already, in the groin
- Pours with drinking! -
In the kidney, soon, they will have it
Thus let us drink!

Very white, it left
But, at the end of the part,
- Pours with drinking! -
It is color vermilion
Thus let us drink!

If vermilion and if dew
That we baptized it
- Pours with drinking! -
?Rosalie?, in unison
Thus let us drink!

?Rosalie?, glorious sister
De Durandal and Joyeuse,
- Pours with drinking! -
Supports our good reputation
Thus let us drink!

Would be without fear and reproaches
And, of the impure blood of Boches,
- Pours with drinking! -
Water encor our furrows!
Thus let us drink!

We are thirsty for revenge
Rosalie! pour in France,
- Pours with drinking! -
Glory with full cans!
Thus let us drink!
Kinda of gory I think.
