I thought this would be one cool knife to try and make. I like it. I think I am gonna try to replicate it for my son's collection. He likes this odd stuff. Oakie

That's the worst bread knife I've ever seen.

If you do succeed in replicating it, I hope you take pics of the process. Would be cool to see.

dumb. you can cut on stuff, but you can't cut through anything. really doesn't do anything a utility knife can't do. except poke stuff.

To me it looks more like an Old Turkish style spare head, The so-called handle is hollow and threaded so that you can screw a shaft into it

Kind of cool and unique, not sure how practical it would be but for a stabbing weapon it would be mean. That would leave a bad wound like a triangle shaped bayonet.

I checked out some of his other stuff and he has some cool knives. I like the western style Bowie knife.

I have never had a Damascus knife before, what are the advantages?

I know the barrels on old shotguns are dangerous due to fouling getting in the metal and eroding it.

Good luck with it I think it might be harder to make than it looks and FM posted some sound advice even to me someone who only hit nails with a hammer[:D]

After forging the Damascus billet you will be doing yourself a huge favor to use/make a top and bottom 'fuller' to put the 'groove' in the billet, prior to twisting,,,,,,,,,

Also, by roughly sharpening the edges before twisting will facilitate the final sharpening process,,,,,,,
I was thinking along the same lines last night. Cannot imagine doing the whole sharpening process, after twisting. It really is an impractical knife, just looked fun to try and make.

I was under the impression that Damascus steel was better quality at a certain time period in the past because the techniques used in creating it yeilded a more consistent steel than other techniques at that time. I believe modern metallurgy has surpassed that level of quality and now the main advantage to damascus steel is the creation of beautiful patterning.

    Can damascus be machined safely?

    Nice conversation piece....not very practical.

But there's nothing saying we have to be practical all the time.

Be creative and make it for your sons enjoyment, too.

When looking around, there are potential blade everywhere. Bed frames, lawn mower blades. If you have a grinder and imagination maybe a file.

You can make it if you try.
