Thinking about getting a different truck

I have a 20 year old Ford Ranger. It was part of the farm when we bought the place. It was my FIL's truck so I have some attachment to it. It runs great, but the A/C is shot and it is not 4WD which is a problem around the farm from
time to time.

I want an extended cab, 4WD and enough power to pull a small boat or trialer......most of the vehicles I have looked are way too loaded with stuff I do not need or want....This will be my daily ride as well as used to take care of whatever is needed around the farm.

Any way, tell me about what you are driving and what's good and bad about it.

The Current Ride

I have a cj5 jeep and an old f-150 at the cabin for getting firewood, hunting and pulling my little jon boat. Don't need the air as I don't use them much. Find an old willys pickup or some beater with a great 4wd system. Just my opinion. You can find all kinds of good trucks on fleebay or C list. oakie

I have an 86 F-350 460ci 4x4. It has the options that would have been available in 1986 (PS,PR,AC,AM-FM) but none of the new stuff. I find it fits my needs very well. The downside is that I spend about $1000 per year on replacing parts that are giving out. But the parts that are giving out provide plenty of warning, so I'm not broken down at the side of the road. $1000 per year is well less than the depreciation I'd have with something newer. And I can go anywhere I want without the fear that the authorities will be monitoring the GPS to see where I have been.

I love the Nissan Frontier. Have been driving them for 25 years.
The new Frontiers are packing about 260 hp, ought to pull your trailer.

Had a 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and loved it but always needing to make dump runs, haul stufd etc and can't do that well with a Jeep. So exactly a year ago I bought this 2011 Toyota Tundra 4x4 Crew Max. I fricken love this truck. Has a 4.6L V8 and gets better mpg than the Jeep with a V6 did. Gobs of power and roomier than many "luxury" cars. I can take up to 6 people too. I'm not a hard core off-road driver but this truck does great. I'll get another jeep someday but I'd like to get a 2005 TJ for fun. I added the side steps & Magnaflow exhaust.

DITTO Ruger 41. Have the same exact PU in the extended cab and love it. Had F-150's for 25 years and the last one was a real $$$$ fiasco. Thought I'd try a Toyota. Consumers had very good reports on it so I thought I'd try it. Great vehicle.

I didn't want all the power stuff in mine either. I bought it with no power seats or windows and no heated seats etc. I didn't want anything that would give me problems 20 years down the road. I've had it now for 12 years and so far no problems.

I bought mine with a rubber matt on the floor also instead of carpet. I put carpeted floor matts in it to look better but if I get mud or spill something in the floor I just wash it out with soap and water.

If you're not into all the bells and whistles, the Ford F-150 XLT has what you need--power, good looks, lots of standard features, and a GREAT price tag. Plus it's lighter this year and 4 wheel drive.

Mine is a 1975 Dodge Power Wagon.

    Fulltime 4x4

I don't have huge Farm but I do have about 12ac. I do a lot of hauling and I burn a lot of wood in the winter.

This is not my "daily" driver but it does get driven to town, to feed stores, the dump and land fill either to drop off or pick up mulch.

I would drive just about anywhere but it gets terrible gas mileage(maybe 13 mpg). But for a truck I can take to the quarry and fill with gravel or use it to pull a trailer with my tractor, it does the job. For going deep into the woods to cut up a tree and haul it out it is the next best thing to a skider.

I would get a used truck to just keep on the farm and nicer vehicle as a daily driver. Used F-250 gas engine trucks with a stick from 95-2000 are fairly cheap and can be found with low mileage. Look for some state owned vehicle that has been maintained well.
