They keep showing the M1a1Abrams main battle tank.They show some footage from inside the tank,while firing a round from the main gun.
What falls out of the breach after the shot looks to me like just the base of the round with a small rod that most likely is some sort of primer that goes about 4-6" up into the powder charge in the actual round.
Are these rounds "caseless"?
All that pops out after the shot is,like I mentioned" is the case head.
Anyone know what the deal is with that?
I remember the older tanks fired and the empty case would pop out of the breach,looking like a HUGE necked down rifle cartridge.
I need to know...Please,help me out here..

I believe the "casing" is combustible and essentially burns up when the propellant is ignited. The case head is metal and that is what is ejected when the breech is opened.
Looked like that to me in a diagram of a tank round I found in google.
That's a major advantage for US. No more 2' long brass casings to deal with inside the turret.Just case heads with primer sticks.
WAY smaller spent ammo to take up precious space,inside the tank..
