The gunsmith just emailed me that my new rifle is done. About 25 years ago he built my 460 on a Remington Model 30 action. Last year I found a very early (serial 121) Model 30 with a trashed stock and sent it to him to make into a matching 300 H&H.

Here's the 460. The 300 is supposed to be as close as possible in looks.

Doc I have never heard of a 460 Jeffery can you post a picture of the bullet and some ballistics?

On a side note I have a Friend who works security and game management at Lewa Conservancy in Kenya. I got to see him shoot an Elephant that had a broken leg. They had to get permission from the Kenyan Government and that was after trying to help it.

He got around in front of it and shot it in the head with a 500 Jeffery loaded with a 525gr Solid. The Elephant looked like it had been electrocuted. It dropped right there. His rifle was built on a square bridge Mauser magnum action.

I have a Parker Hale M1100 in 404 Jeffery, it is my favorite rifle to just go out and shoot.

Wow, if your new one comes out looking like your 460. It will be a very good looking gun. Congratulations on finding an old model 30.

That 460 Jefferies would make one damn fine Rabbit gun. Better stick with smaller game when you use the 300 H&H![:D][:D]
Nice looking rifle, please post pics of the new one.

In the 1970s Guns & Ammo magazine editor Tom Siatos designed a heavy game cartridge that would exceed the 458 Winchester but be short of the 460 Weatherby. He wanted a case with no belt so he took the 404 Jeffrey case and necked it up to .458" and blew out the case wall so it had a sharp shoulder. He called it the "460 Guns & Ammo" because he knew which side of his bread was buttered. It's usually called the 460 G&A for short. This is a 375 H&H length cartridge and requires a long action as the standard Mauser 98 length is too short.

In the early 1980s Jeff Cooper built a heavy rifle in 460 G&A using a CZ602 action. His had a short 21" barrel and an extended magazine to hold 6 rounds. He used on an African safari and wrote of it in the magazine.

For some crazy reason that I don't recall I decided that I needed a heavy rifle like Cooper's so I bought a new 602 in 375 H&H but couldn't bring myself to cut it up. Instead I found a Remington Model 30S in a local shop with a cracked stock. The 30 was made 1921 to 1940 and is a more refined commercial version of the 1917 Enfield. Its best feature is the fact that it is a true magnum length action like the 602. This was built into the rifle pictured above.

The 460 G&A launches a 500 grain bullet at around 2350 FPS. The 404 cases are formed by necking them up to .454 using a Colt 45 expander die, loading a lead 250 grain bullet over 30 grains of 2400, and pulling the trigger. With full loads this thing rattles my teeth. I don't know why I have it as it is NOT fun to shoot.

I coined the name 460 Jeffrey. I hated the original name of the cartridge and had the smith stamp the barrel 460 Jeffrey as more appropriate given its parentage.

Left to right are the 460J, the 458W, the 458 Lott and the 416 Ruger.

I got it! I thought I had heard of most of the popular big game cartridges and the wildcats out there. I have heard of the 460 G&A.

    Thanks.

I have a CZ 550 in 458 Lott that really rattles my teeth. I have no need for it but got a good deal on it and I was thinking of taking it to Africa on one of my trips and sell it. The problem is its such a hassle now to sell a gun there its really not worth the trouble.

I like my 404 Jeffrey its not too bad to shoot except on a bench. Standing and kneeling its really a sweet heart.
