I offered to let him punch me in the jaw!

I have my 56 Willy's Wagon up for sale on the hippy site for $4000 and got a call from a guy up in Reno.

After talking back and forth he agreed to by it. I knocked off another $500 because he was coming so far was 72 years old, and just a nice guy.

He gets here to Vegas, looks it over and hears it run and say's deal, get the title! I get the title and of course he wants to compare numbers, and guess what? No Vin plate!

When I bought the Jeep I remember reading off the numbers from the guy I had bought it from, but could not find them anywhere now! We looked for almost an hour before he gave up and said he had to go.

I apologized profusely to him and told him that I would take a few loose teeth if he wanted too. He smiled and just said, "I had a good drive"!

I told him that I would keep looking and if he wasn't too far away when I found them, I would pay for his Gas to come back. He said that once he hit the Highway he was going to keep on going.

He left and about ten minutes later I found the damn numbers! I called him back and he was only ten miles away.

And true to his word, he kept on going!

Man I feel like crap.

Yup, and that is why I feel lower than the bottom of a Turd.

Its rare to find them like that anymore.

I can't imagine not turning around if you were only 10 miles away....he must have wanted out of the deal to begin with.

That's the thing I don't understand. He did want it, The title was in his hand and he wanted to pay me for it.

I think that he was just completely wore out from the drive down and still had to drive back. 18 hours round trip, and 72 years old!

Yup, he said he was coming to get it!

Brand new Dodge truck and the trailer looked new too.

My first thought as well...that and maybe being a bit supertitious in that it was not meant to be.

Not really. He could have arranged for U ship it or someone else to go get it.

I guess if he rebuilt the carb and fixed the break line, he could have towed that big old dodge and trailer back with him![:o)][:D]

Is it on the seat riser on the drivers side?

The actual Vin plate was on the drivers side but was missing.

The frame numbers that matched the title were on the right side, top of frame just to the rear of the shock tower.

According to the web, Willy's stamped them in all kinds of different places!

it was a matter of trust, probably an honest mistake on your part, but a stranger may not see it that way

My father had a 1959 jeep just like yours that was red, right hand drive. I think it was a 4 cylinder with a manual transmission that you shifted with your left hand. He used it on his mail route for many years. Stopping and starting over 500 times every day. My mom had a hard time learning how to drive a right hand drive vehicle. She ground a few pounds of gears learning how to drive it. That thing would go anywheres. I wish I still had it.

Call him back and tell if he had come back, you would have knocked off another $500, but it is back to full price now.[:D]

He might have gotten the idea in his head that it was a "tag job".
And didn't want any part of it.

Kind of what I was thinking. I once was going to buy a car and there seemed to be something hinky about the deal. Made me nervous and I called it off.

I'm sure that wasn't the case here, that everything was on the up and up, but once a buyer gets spooked the deal is usually off.

The thought to compare numbers of title and VIN plate has never ever even crossed my mind on any vehicle I have bought. Nor has it to the buyer on any vehicle I have ever sold, apparently.

I was going to ask the same thing. I love the old woodys and have wanted one for a hunting rig. Had one for sale locally, but the guy thought he had gold. Still sitting all rusted up and no interior, for 9,000.[:(!] He lives one block away from me and won't budge on the price. It need all new glass, serious body work and a complete interior. He was told it was worth that much from friends. I tried to show him what a restored one went for, but he didn't want to see it.

He was probably stopped somewhere peeing only minutes away, you know how traveling is [:D]. Seriously, there was another reason for him to not finish the transaction, he's just not saying what it is. Bummer of a story though [:(] In a sense your $500 discount to him is back in your pocket [;)], it'll work out better for you.
