Bobwhite Quail Hunting

edited January 2012 in General Discussion
I went hunting for the first time today, since my knee surgery.
My Father in law and I killed 27 quail, I used my new Mossberg Onyx Reserve 12 ga Double Barrell. It worked perfectly, and we had a blast. Our guide Kenny used his three German short haired pointers, and they did wonderful. We got a picture of them all three on point, honoring each other. Hopefully I will post some later. How many of ya'll like to hunt quail? Always looking for more folks to go out and shoot birds.[:D]

We were within our limit, as we were hunting on a preserve. We hunted the afternoon, after some folks that couldnt shoot hunted in the morning. So we got the bonus birds, probably shoot at 30-35, so we missed a few. But it was a blast for sure. And soon gonna be really good eating.

When I grew up we had the true bob white and then the sand quail and they just kept running. Fast little critters and could stand the bad weather better than the Bob White

LOVE IT. May favorite hunt is quail. But here it's so bad, noone hardly even bothers to go hunting anymore. Fire ants and skunks have destroyed quail pops in Texas. Probably bee 10 years since I got to quail hunt.

Changes in farming practices are much of the cause, clearing ditch banks and hedge rows has taken much of the cover away. The quail have moved into the thick thickets that arent controlled by burning as they used to be, if we can get farmers to let the edge rows grow again and not clear all the ditches, perfect cover for the small game, quail included.

    CSI21,
Everyone has an opinion about the lack of quail and in some cases, you may be correct.
We literally don't have any quail in my area of north Missouri and it is NOT due to lack of weeds, brushy ditches, or CRP cover.
I don't understand why so many make a point of blaming a farmer for whatever the problem happens to be. We had plenty of quail and pheasants here when a major part of the area was in row crops which gave the birds something to eat. Now CRP provides nothing but some cover for the predators and the weed seed for food. BTW weed seed provides less nutrition than corn/soybeans.

I agree with you about that, If the food is not there the animals wont be there either. Not blaming farmers at all, just the change in practices. Cover and food have to be there, and controlled burning of the wood/thickets(which is not practiced like it was).

Wild birds, limit is 8. On a preserve as they say, as many as you want, or can actually shoot from what they put out. We got bonus birds from the group before us. Very nice place, good dogs, and still a challenge, just not the same as roaming through 5-7 farms looking for birds, more controlled.

$220 for 20 birds, guide and dog. You can call it what you want, you still have to find the birds and shoot them. It was about a 4 hour hunt, and was a great time. They are pen raised birds that are weather conditioned, however they dont really know how to avoid the hawks and foxes. Also have a nice skeet range there, I havent used the skeet range yet. The dogs are wonderful to watch work in the field.

The birds are placed along the route that they take you. Not really a "hunt". Don

Have you ever hunted on a preserve Don? The birds are put out about an hour earlier, they move about and covey up quickly. Yes they will normally be in the area you are hunting, but 100 acres is a fairly large place to walk around. It is not wild bird hunting, and I never said it was. It is something that is safe and fun, and for someone like me that got of crutches on Wed. it was a blast, and I am sore from head to toe. Only stepped in a few stump holes. The group that went in the morning was a father and his two daughters, poo poo if you want, but its a great thing for some of us that dont have access to thousands of acres or bird dogs. You can walk all day in 100 acres and not find the birds without the dogs.

Its a social thing and even if it is canned it is a great way to spend some time with your family or even "gasp" introduce a newbie (client, vendor, boss, friend, or family member) to the sport of shooting...

It is really a social thing. The birds are just a medium to spend time in the field, watching some dogs work there hearts out.

It is a beautiful thing and i would highly recommend it.

As a kid, I chased some back and forth across a field missing with every shot. Almost a box of shells was spent without hitting a bird.
I never got another crack at quail.
