big enough to carry were bears are known to be? I noticed the ballistics are real close to a .45 caliber.

Is that the absolute Biggest Gun you can Possibly carry?

You probably need to stay in the car.

If Maurice Clemons could take two .40 shots at close range, right in the Boiler room, and stay on his feet and Functional for over 72 hours, I don't think I wanna shoot a Bear with a .40!!

    How fast can you run?

    valid question.
.40 is no slouch standard load, and it can be juiced.
.44 mag would be preferable though.

    sure. plenty big to carry.

it might not kill a bear, but most .40's are on the large side.

L[:p]L! Yes it's big enough to piss the bear off ... just make sure you save some ammo for yourself! [}:)]

    Ditto on HandLoad's post. [^]

    CartridgeComparison.jpg

My back up in the bear country of the Big Sky Country is a .44 Mag with .250gr partition gold JHPs and bear spray, esp when bow hunting.

All you need is a light .22LR and a couple of other guys for company.

Then shoot one of them in the kneecap and run.... then you won't be the slowest.!

How fast can you shoot it accurately, if you're lucky you'll have 3-4 seconds. Most folks can draw and fire 1 maybe 2 rounds accurately in this time frame. 2 rounds of .40 cal is normally not enough to stop a bear. 1-2 rounds of .454 casull is normally enough to stop a bear. I would suggest an upgrade. to either a full automatic .40 cal pistol or at least a .454.

A lot of bow hunters around here carry a .40 caliber, almost all of them use the 10mm version for more power. A Glock 20 gives you 16 rounds of fairly stout ammo versus the five or six in a .44. And I am in bear country, within 15 miles of two of the grizzly stories from this year.

are you planning on shooting it from the inside out?
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Them old bears must be tough. I had a 1200 pound cow that got down on me and one shot from a 40 cal. drop her head in a blink of an eye. I have used a .22, .22 mag, 30-30, 243 and that 40 cal I believe turned the lights out quicker than any of the others round I have ever used on cattle. I once shot a sick cow seven times with a .22 and she still was setting there looking at me.

If you go out in the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise.
If you go out in the woods today
    You'd better go in disguise.

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

And you are the menu!!!! [;)]

If it will shatter the brain pan on a griz, and enter his brain, stopping him before his adreneline fuels him righ over your screaming self, then it is a bear gun. Anything from a .41 mag up has a fair to good chance of doing just that. You can try something smaller if you like, shoot him in the heart like that bovine, and run 60 mph for three minutes while he bleeds out and quits. Me, I'll go for a bigger gun.

And no autos need apply, please. Except maybe the .50 AE, but I don't know the numbers for that cartridge.

Next time you have the opportunity, stand next to a stuffed griz or brown bear. Now imagine it's alive, has a toothache, can't find where the cubs went, and hates your guts. Then decide what you'll carry in the Rockies.

You go ahead and treat the bear as you would with a cow and let us know how it goes.

    no
Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.

Whether Black Bear or Grizz, a handy 12 gauge pump or auto, loaded with slugs is decent bear medicine and puts all those handguns to shame easily.
