Holidays n'Vacation days... Aren't "All That"

This past week has been exhausting.
We had Monday as Easter Holiday and I took Tuesday as a vacation day.
One would think that logically I'd work three days and that would be it.
Nope...
IMHO... Holidays and Vacation Days benefit hourly employees...
But, those of us who are salaried don't necessarily benefit from the lack of hours.
When I got to work Wednesday morning... I still had a FULL WEEK of work to do in a three day period.
I actually worked 37 hours this past week at the office and a few more hours here at home.
I never have liked taking time off... My work isn't done by anyone, but me.
There's no production line that I man and when I'm out, someone else jus'picks up where I left off.
Nope... What needed to be done last week got done whether the week had five business days or three...
And deliveries don't get pushed off just because I wasn't in the office for two days. [:(!]
Any contrary comments or am I pretty much on the mark ?

My current employer has talked to me about taking an Engineer's title and salary, but I am loathe to do it. They need about another 10 to 20 hours out of me each week and I've always been willing to step up.
At time and a half rate of course [:D]
Since they banned overtime for hourly engineering staff like me, my pay is way down. But if I take that new title and pay scheme the hours will jump to "Whatever it takes" for only a small increase in the annual dollars.
Just not acceptable.
There is no free lunch for management. Every day I take off is paid for with two days of extra work, fixing the screw ups that happened because I wasn't there.
Amen to that... The EXACT reason... My supervisor and anyone who is in my supervision has my cell phone number.
I also monitor my eMail in 'real time'...
I literally hate coming back to "issues" that occur in my absence.
I'd rather take the ten minutes required to answer a question or give direction...
Than to have something done arbitrarily just because... I wasn't available.
That excuse isn't available and I'll NOT accept it.
They need my attention... They have it. Period... And they know it too.
For instance... I answered six eMails today in a period of maybe 30 minutes...
That could easily be six errors that would take me most of Monday to correct.
And put me a day behind... Yet again. [:(]
I am hourly now, have been salaried in the past at other jobs. Have to agree that salaried is often a raw deal when looked at by how many hours are worked, what you really get paid per hour. Measured that way it only makes sense to me when the salary is a whole lot higher than what you would get on an hourly scheme for the same work.

I hear ya'Chris... Wish I could go hourly myself.
I did go contract back '04... Charged by the hour.
My earlier employer became just ONE of my clients...
I made more money than I thought possible.
And... After about six months of working on a contract basis...
My earlier employer requested numerous times to rehire me at my old job.
'Cause... They were paying me more for contract than they did salaried. Duh...
When they finally met my terms, I returned... Only to finally leave for good in 2012.
Now... I have a similar issue pay-hour wise. It's the nature of the beast known as "Salaried". [B)]
Well, Ozma was glad to have you out 'from under foot' after 4 days around the house. Huh, Ozma ???? [;)][:D]
Well, there is a reason I finally went back to work after almost a year...
Of constantly posting on GBGD. [;)]
My job (or I should say my career) has never been zero-sum when it comes time to evaluate time taken off versus the additional time and effort I have to give when I accomplish whatever didn't get done while I was gone and everyone else wasn't.
Although I have many responsibilities that don't change from week to week, my work load has always ebbed and flowed. I've had months where I've been light and then same time period following that I'm in there 12 hours a day plus because of demands from unusual sources.
Salaried, of course. [:D]
The only time that wasn't true was when I worked fior this company in Indiana and these guys were such cheap pricks that they encouraged you to not take all of your vacation off. Or practically made you take all of it off at one time so it would be gone in June. I remember the one owner (yeah, both owners were in that office every. single. freakin'. day.) would tell his favorite joke when we were in meetings or something, he'd say "Now don't forget everyone that if you're running short on time or think you might miss a deadline I encourage you to take advantage of our HESS program... you're welcome to come into the office on holidays, evenings, Saturdays, Sundays...Ho Ho Ho!!"
Prick.
I never ever give back vacation. Sick days, of course. Because I don't ever use them and I'm in private industry so they don't *. But vacay I'll take the last four of whatever days off at the end of December and sit at home and clean the guns.
One of the guys I work with gets three weeks of vacation each year and probably takes maybe three, four days the whole year. He tells me he just doesn't have anything going on so no reason to take time off but I believe he thinks if he isn't around then that might increase the chances of him being laid off or replaced. Which is ridiculous in my opinion because 1) he does a great job and 2) not taking time off isn't going to make Jack difference when upper management decides to fire you, er, I mean lay you off.
