I wanted to watch a soccer game live and accidentally downloaded V9 portal.
This has taken over my browser which is google chrome.
How do I remove it?

Quickest solution to try is a system restore to as point before the download

Open Chrome and go to the settings page by clicking the three bars graphic. Click the button that says "Manage Search Engines. On the list that appears, delete all but the ones you like by hovering on the item and click the X that appears for that line. Then reset your home page entry to suit, and restart your browser and it should be fixed.

    Agreed.

I get called on now and then by friends and relations for such things. Sometimes I find good clues simply with Google searches. It's risky though, there are countless fake websites that exist just to deliver a virus. Many pretend to be anti-virus or anti-malware.

MalWareBytes is a good tool you can download and use for free. Often helps. The free version you have to run manually. Paying for it allows you to set it up to run itself.

If you had FireFoxx I'd advise getting NoScript:
    http://noscript.net/

Don't know what's available for Google Chrome but it's worth looking for something like NoScript. It stops Java Scripts from running unless you allow them to run. This can completely disable some websites, but it's easy to authorize a site, even temporarily. What this does is prevent active content from running without you knowing about it. Took some getting used to but I wouldn't be without it now.

    Good luck.

I went to "manage search engines" and sure enough v9 portal was there. I deleted it and made google chrome my search engine.

But it didn't get rid of it! When I turn on the computer v9 portal is on the screen, not google chrome.

I really hate asking stupid questions but what is a V9 portal, why is it undesirable and how does one get it in the first place??

Go ahead and pay the ransom and get out of it. Best bet is to try restore first, if that doesn't work install Firefox.

That is not a stupid question; rather, I am a stupid computer user.

V9 portal takes over your home page and your email accounts. Instead of Internet Explorer, it will say V9 Portal.
Then it spies on all your activities and sends info to whoever it wants to.

I got it by trying to watch live streaming of a soccer game yesterday. A bogus sign appeared on the screen and said I needed to download some app in order to watch the game. Once I downloaded the app I had inadvertently downloaded V9 Portal.

I have just gotten rid of it! I went to the bottom of the V9 home page and they had a heading "uninstall." I followed the directions and it is gone, thank God!

READ THIS AND TAKE IT TO HEART

    Get Ubuntu Linux OPerating system.

It's free, faster, and safer than Windows. You can try it too, without changing anything on your computer...

    Linux is like being invisible.

Windows is like having signs on yourself, and shouting, "Here I come world, and I'm going to spend money". Panhandlers come bumming from you germs, viruses, malware, etc. Salesmen come hitting on you - pop-ups. And thieves come at you - ID theft, guns and knives.

Antivirus? Yeah - it works sometimes. But ask a soldier in the jungle if he likes bullet proof armor when it's 96 degrees. Ask him if he'd rather just be invisible.

Windows is like government. Does everything for you, and charges you for it. THen it does lots of stuff you don't need, and charges you for THAT too. Fastest hardware CPU and RAM is worthless if it's gettin' bogged down with anti-virus. And Windows bogs itself down, even before you browse the web.

Linux not only is like YOU invisible, but your house (computer) too. Thief hacker can't see your house, and if he happens by chance to feel it, he has to feel for the door, or window, etc., ... And you got time to react. You should see a virus trying to attack a Linux machine. Funniest crap you ever saw..

One time, I saw an open file on my desktop start adding 1's to the filename. That was the best it could do. I de-compiled it afterwards as best I could, and that ain't what it would have done to a Windows box. It was pretty nasty.

I could go on about Windows vs. Linux / Unix. There's NO comparison...

Download Ubuntu 1204, burn to a CD DVD, re-boot your box, and run in a live environment. Won't change your computer at all. Except it will run FAST. And safe, and free.

It will even install if you want, BESIDE Windows, and you can dual-boot, with a menu given at boot-up. But you'll never go back to Windows.

Even if you decide not to go Linux, put Mozilla FireFox browser in your Windows. That would probably be like being invisible, but still making noise as you go...

    FREEDOM, or Windows handcuffs.

OH yeah - did you know that Microsoft installs an NSA - yeah - National Security Agency - hexadecimal registry key in your Windows???

    Wise old Sage OUT!!!

Linux is an operating system. A replacement for windows, not a replacement for explorer or security.

I disagree there Sir, with qualifying condition...

NOTHING is secure on computers, relatively speaking. But the difference between security in Linux, and with Windows, is in all practicality, is NOT comparable...

Ubuntu Linux Mr Griggs, is an operating system. It's user-friendly nowadays, whereas in it's beginnings, it was not.

Familiarity with command-line windows - that is, typing in commands to execute a task, is a thing of the past, for the most part.

In fact, it has become more Windows-esque, and some, myself included, don't particularly like how it has evolved...
