I had a chance to buy a mosin nagant pistol dated 1913 from a guy I met today. He said his grandfather left it to him. He does not have an FFL nor do I. As far as he knows, it is not registered. We both live in the same city. Can I buy it?

If the gun is legal to be sold or possessed in your location, and if it is legal for you to own it, yes. But, since I don't know where you and the seller live, it is a qualified yes.

    mosin nagant pistol?

do you mean the nagant revolver?
I do not see why a 7 shoot SA/DA revolver would be illegal to transfer

depending on where you live, guns dont need to be "registered", i have done many person to person transactions, get a receipt, i typically take both I.D's{mine and theirs}, photo copy them, and make a receipt with signature on both, just a cya

You would be wise to make out a bill of sale and get a copy of his ID. He should do the same. Not required, just smart.

KSU,yes it is a nagant revolver.
I know the law changed here in MO. that I no longer have to get a permit for a handgun but I was not sure if I had to do anything with it being a person to person sale. Thanks for the help, you guys are the best!

You must both be residents of the same state. Federal law. Otherwise, he must send to a FFL in your home state. You cannot be a person prohibited from possessing a handgun.

C&P from extract of MO firearm laws-

    Handguns

Permit to purchase a handgun? No
    Registration of handguns? No
Licensing of owners of handguns? No
    Permit to carry handguns? Yes

    Make two receipts.

Put both your full names, drivers license numbers, drivers license expiration dates, and addresses on both receipts.
Also put the make, model, caliber, and serial number of the gun on both receipts.

Both of you sign & date both receipts.

The receipt covers both of your * when the gun gets stolen down the line and used in a crime or when you get pulled over and the officer runs the gun and finds that it was previously stolen.

What state are you in? Most allow private party sales and some do not.

New rule. Do whatever you want just don't get caught. [;)] (this advise was told to me by an old time FBI agent)

    solution to non existing problem.

Chances are these guns are availabel all over the internet for $50-$100. I am willing to bet his grandfather had nothing to do with the gun. I don't know, but I would think a bring back gun would have some form of way of being identified.

It doesn't have a sn right? If the gun is legal, who has it is legal to own it, nuff said. nothing else is required.

If you mean the nagant revolver don't pay more then 100 for it. There is a web site with a large inventory selling them for 100 dollars.
