I'm trading a few guns off on a vehicle. Just guns that i picked up for a good deal and have other guns in these calibers. Guy wants make, model and serial to check them out. I have heard stories about never giving out serial numbers of guns and see online that most people block out the last couple numbers.

I have in the past so the buyer could check to make sure it wasn't stolen. If you have records to show you have owned it a while, I don't see a problem.

Some people are funny about it, not much a person can do with the information, it would not be wise to attempt to file a false police report and claim the gun as stolen

To me its as stupid as those that engrave their social security number on the gun, but to each their own

Often discussed. Nothing has ever happened by giving a serial.

    70G30498

Do something with it. I have been posting that number for 10 years inviting anyone to cause mischief. So far nada.

Can and do all the time, most all of our auctions at some point show the serial number of the gun. I for one would think it hilarious for someone to try and claim a gun as stolen or some other tomfoolery, I can prove where I got every gun that has ever been in my possession, I doubt anyone trying to pull something can.

In the case of older guns such as Winchester lever actions I couldn't see NOT giving the serial number.

At first I didn't show serial numbers on photos because people here not to. But I began seeing lots of sellers doing it and I couldn't see a reason why it's bad. So I gave up editing photos to take out serial numbers.

Of course I don't sell much, strictly small fry on that end of things.

But, but, but, you just CAN'T post a gun serial number here. The sky will fall, the sky will fall. [:D][:D]

Maybe he got burnt in the past buying a gun and later having it show up on the NCIC list as stolen. He may live in a jurisdiction where the local cops are willing to run the number pre-sale so the buyer will be comfortable he is not going to be stuck with a hot gun. I'd go ahead and tell him, if it will close the deal.

Some people apparently fear it will be reported stolen by someone who may try to claim it or at least make trouble for the owner but cops take a dim view of filing false police reports. It is a felony in most if not all states.

And, as I said before, it has never happened.

The serial I posed is for a Colt pistol.

I think people block out serial numbers because they see the gun magazines doing it. Why they do it I don't know either.

Doc, given your posted picture, do you think anyone is going to give you trouble? It appears you could rival even dcon in the *-kicking department!
