Range time---.17 HMR issue

I picked dad up and went out to the range for a bit yesterday. I put some rounds through my Glock 36 and dialed in my Ruger M77 .308. I put a different scope on it, dialed it in with factory ammo, and now have some needed brass for handloads too.

Anyways, my dad had his Savage .17 HMR out and we were shooting CCI 17 grain ammo.....and we had 3 cases that split at the neck all the way down to the shoulder.

Anyone heard of any issues with this ammo lately?

Jon

I have a .17 cz and never had any problems, is it old ammo. I though cci had a recall on some of its 17s years ago because it was too hot i thought? Is the chamber clean? Really accurate cartridge out of the box.[:)]

Thanks. Yeah, he said he has had the box he was shooting for a few years so it could be from the batch you speak of.

Chamber was good and he has had the fun for quite a while without any other issues, so we figured something with the ammo. It shot accurate and we didn't have any other issues. I was just going to email CCI and let them know about it, but sounds like they may already know.

I get 3 or 4 split out of every box regardless of manufacturer .
That is why you no longer see semi autos in HMR or Mach ll .

Should not hurt anything. I have read some experts claim that a cracked or split neck will score the chamber but I have fired hundreds of rounds of .38 and .357 that split on firing without marring the chamber.
