I have read several of the other topics on this rifle. I would first like to say that I like this rifle. When this gun was new I had a jam were the action was cocked and would not operate. I took the gun apart following the directions and could not get it to function. I took the rifle to Gander Mountain as directed by Remington. They told me that they simply took the rifle apart and put it back together and it worked fine. Last year I put approx. 100 rounds thru it before it had a similar jam. I took it apart and this time it work but after 15 rounds the action jammed again. I want this rifle to work, so my question is could the rods it slides on be bent. I did put a small amount of grease on the slots before I put it together was this wrong. One of the videos I watch called this a metal on metal system. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks

I have had a Remington 597 17hmr for the past 5 years, shot over 5000 rounds with the occasional ejection jam, but loved the gun. With the recent recall I decided that it was not wise to take any more chances with it and sent it back to Remington for the $250. I purchased a new Remington 597 22wmr. I picked it up yesterday, bore sighted it this morning and took it to the range this afternoon. Dialed it in at 25 yards with the first 8 round clip, moved the target to 50 yards and was half way through the second clip when the shell casing ruptured, blowing the bottom off the magazine along with the remaining unfired rounds. It also split the laminated stock just forward of my cheek, but I felt nothing and in fact I had no idea this had happened and tried to shoot the next round. Scary.....

My son bought a Remington 597 22LR. He was hoping to buy an AR style stock. I have not had any luck locating anything but a 30 round magazine. Does anyone know of anything? Thanks

I used to own one. The gun was great, the mags were crap. I hear Remington fixed the mags.

    I have owned a 597 in 22 LR for about 16 years.

    Been very reliable and accurate.

    I like it a lot better than a 10-22.

Best single shot 22 semi auto I've ever owned. Yall think is is just the mags? When mine is out of the stock the action is slick. Put it back in the stock. Hangs every dang time.

Hey, that's worth more than the rifle. [:D]

I had two of them, they ran great with a little tweaking. I put VQ hammers in them, much nicer trigger. Float the barrel and finger tight on the spring guide set screw does the trick.

I would buy another one, they can be had fairly cheap.
