Hand surgery

Went for the consultation on my broken hand yesterday. Doctor took one look at my hand and said, WTH happened to your hand[:D] I have never seen a hand so beat up. It is split, cracked and I have a virus in it, that has no cure. Been to four specialist and they all said there is no cure for the virus. The Doctor said he cannot operate on my broken wrist and finger, until my hand gets cleared up. He said that the surgery would cause such an infection, that I would probably end up with something so bad, he would have to amputate it.[B)] No friggen way. Now I have to get my skin cleared up enough to have the surgery. Got more steroid creme and some other medicine for my hand this morning, to try to heal it before Christmas. This way, I can take a week to heal from the surgery and just go on a little vacation. I will be in a cast for about two months after the surgery. I hate sitting in the office, but I guess I will be confined to a chair for a few months. Either that, or I am heading to the Mountains for a while. Either way, this sucks, because my hand and wrist are sore and the bones are all broken and need pins put in. In the mean time, I have to wear a brace to keep my wrist from moving. He has to clean out my knuckle and pin that too. Oakie

You've got a real mess there my friend. Take the doc's advice. You're only gonna get one chance to heal it right. Take a few days and head up to supervise the construction project.

As long as it's been they will surely have to break it in a few places where it's started growing back crooked won't they??

    Yikes!
This definitely sounds like a case of "Do as you're told".
I hope it isn't really as painful as it sounds. . .

So help me understand here...you already had a broken wrist on the hand which got hit with the sledge hammer??? Or the sledge hammer broke not only your knuckles, hand but also your wrist? WTH??

And you didn't go get this checked out after all that damage????

    WOW!

Yup, one shot broke my wrist and shattered my knuckle. The bone started to heal already and will have to be broken again. It is actually at the skin surface. It looks like a big lump on the side of my wrist. The knuckle is just mush at this point. I am stubborn and hate doctors and hospitals. I avoid them at any cost.

Mike, I will have to look the virus up. What happens is, when I get upset or stressed out, within 15 to 30 minuets, little blisters develop on my hand and itch like hell. I scratch them until they bleed. This virus affects one in every seven people. I didn't know it was that common. I developed it when I was in sixth grade. The doctor said it effects one or the other hand or foot. There is no cure or treatment for it, except to put a anti itch creme on it. I found that the creme doesn't even help. It feels like I have poison ivy and my hand actually burns. On top of that, my skin splits and cracks when the cold weather arrives. It gets to the point where I can't even close my hand or pick thing up, for days at a time. Right now, I have about 50 little cracks and cuts on the palm of my hand and fingers. My hand just constantly bleeds, until it dries up. I put a steroid creme and bag balm or udder balm on my hand, every night, and put it in a glove. Looks great in the morning and then terrible by noon. Oakie

Now I know where the saying "If I had known I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself" came from.[:D]

Seriously Oakie, Take care of it and it will heal. Good luck to you.

I just keep smiling and keep moving forward. No sense in getting upset over things you have no control over. It was an accident and my employee is still upset over it. He is a great kid and I love him like a son. I just want it taken care of before the new year, when my insurance deductible, starts over.

Oakie I went thru five surgeries on my left hand surgeon re attached 3 fingers and it looks good now but I have use of index and thumb only do to ulnar nerve damage.
Don't go around doing stuff you shouldn't be doing, hand surgery is called microsurgery and requires much care to heal properly.
I hope you get better soon.
