I recently moved and seem to have somehow lost a gun in the process. What is the first thing I should do??

Thanks,

Speaking of lost guns. It seems that someone found a loaded Glock .40 caliber pistol laying in the intersection of two state highways in a rural part of our county the other day. The fellow who found it reported it to the county police. They ran the serial number and it wasn't listed as lost or stolen. When they asked the sheriff's department if anyone was missing a gun, they found out that it belonged to one of the deputies. The last time he saw it, it was on the kitchen table. (It was his personal weapon, not department issue) He doesn't know how it got out of his home. He said there was no sign of forced entry at his home.

I went to a local auction today to pick up two guns I bought a couple weeks ago. They could only find one and say they have to release both guns together, so I cannot pick up the one they found. Got a call and they say they will find it by tomorrow, we'll see.

I recently purchased gun on GunBroker which was shipped from ID coming to Mo. The gun was shipped USPS with a expected delivery date of Jan 3 2017 as of this date it has not arrived. Both the seller and I have been working with the post office but I was told they would not start a search until 30 days from the date of shipping.
I have had a gun come in late both shipping and receiving but nothing like this. What do you guys feel is a reasonable amount of time for me to request my money back.

Its not the seller's fault....you should hold the responsible party 100% to blame and expect to get your money from the insurance claim.

In my opinion if the seller has provided you with proof of shipping, ie tracking numbers that work, then your problem is with the USPS not the seller. Good luck.

Fact is the gun was at the FFL since the 7th. Why did they not call me? They all know I collect Winchesters and it was in a Remington box. Good help is hard to find. I had checked with them just a couple days before.
Apparently some of you have never had a lost gun or had one damaged in shipping. Even though The seller charged the buyer to put insurance on the gun the seller is the named insured. The shipping company will not disclose to you if they settled with the seller or not or how much they paid. In the shipping companies eyes you have no insurable interest while the gun was being shipped. Even if the gun is delivered to you it is up to the seller to settle the claim for any damage. They will ask you to keep all the shipping material so they can inspect it but they will not pay you. If the gun is lost they will pay the seller not you.
The only way you will receive any money would be if the seller was to pay you. Most of the time a damage claim is denied because of poor packing.
I buy my own insurance which covers the gun from the time the check is cashed, and it includes coverage for shipping and is added to my master policy for all my guns.

You don't have to explain anything to me....I deal with at least one a year. I have two current claims that are working through the system. Both are more than 6 months old. One is a pre-64 Winchester model 70 that was shipped in a hard case, but when arrived the stock was broken in half. The second one is missing because the carrier left my box, along with several others, outside a CLOSED gun store.

Both of these are being processed....the post office has denied the claim, appealed three times and both have been sent (in writing) on to customer relations. They never just pay the claim....not once....not ever. Still.....both customers understand that it is not my fault and the claims are going to eventually be taken care of. They both have the claim numbers and have been able to check on things using that number.

In all cases that this happens the customer is paid as soon as the claim is processed. Its crazy that they are allowed to do things this way. I wish someone would start a class action suit against the postal agency over denied claims.....I'm sure there are a LOT of valid claims that are denied every day and not everyone jumps through all the hoops they put people through to get it paid.

locust fork, you are very lucky your customers are very understanding. It makes absolutely nothing to them that your shipper is not going to provide coverage. The claim is against you not them. The claim numbers means nothing to your customers other than the c shipper is not going to pay, which of course does not release you from the claim.
This is a common misunderstanding, I have a claim against you and your insurance company does not pay. That does not mean you do not owe the claim. All it means is your insurance for some reason excludes the coverage. For example poor packing. The processing of a claim has nothing to do with when a claim is paid. You owe it you pay it and collect from your insurance company

is was not your fault, the claim is against you not your insurance company, "shipping company". The claim number means absolutely nothing to them other than the fact your coverage has been denined.

I had a buyer complaining that the rifle I mailed him had not arrived. The Postmaster here tracked it to the receiving post office where it had been sitting a corner for a week.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

I had a USPS Check that kept going back and fourth between two post office. The guy rejected the check because he said he was drunk when he sold me the gun at the price he set which was to cheap but he did not tell me. Not a GB deal. It took 45 days for me to get my money back. My local carrier does a great job if he can get to my house.

Yes, I do have the gun but the tracking still shows it is in transit. It was delivered the 7th to the FFL. Have do idea why it was not scanned when in reached the post office here or when it was signed for at the FFL That does not excuse the FFL for not getting in touch with me, I just happened to stop in to tell them there still was no tracking on the gun.
If you want a real treat try to talk to someone to report a package that has not been delivered. Most of the people can speak English problem is they do not understand it. They could not understand why I had a package being sent to me going to a different address, the FFL.

I sent a five grand airplane part to Oklahoma for service. It was sent to Kansas, back to Cincinnati, sat there for several days and made its way to Oklahoma after about three weeks.

When packages get lost or mis-delivered by USPS UPS or FEDEX it is a crap shoot what will finally happen about it.

When I sent my postal money orders for my Python the payment was sent priority with delivery confirmation. It disappeared for 3 weeks, and the status was mis-sent. It was supposed to go to Utah and ended up in Nebraska before being sent on to Utah.

It seems to me if the USPS is so hard to deal with on claims then why use them? Are UPS and Fed Ex just as bad?

It is very nearly impossible to settle a damage claim with any of these folks even if they pack it. Most will pay for a lost gun after a few months wait. My son is the shipping and receiving manager that ship thousands of packages a year and he rates USPS,UPS and FedEx about the same. He does not ship guns in his job. He is a gun collector like myself so he is on the receiving end more than the shipping end and has never been paid for a damaged gun but usually can send it back to the seller once it has been inspected by the shipper. We will not buy from a no return seller if they state no return for any reason.
For some reason a large number of sellers require payment buy USPS which according to what I have been told is the most counterfeit money order out there. My bank will not take one if you do not have an account with them and a balance high enough to cover it. It will not post until it clears. I use a credit card when possible.
