This tax is at the retail level. there are other taxes on gas before it gets to the retail level.

ah the answer is quite elementary. #1 when prices are high, and the economy is weak, not as much is sold. instead of a fill up its a 1/2 talk full or even just a day's worth. either way the quantity sold per customer is less.. #2 CAFE standards since the inception of high fuel mileage standards, more miles driven are being squeezed out of a gallon of gas. #3 cash for clunkers....remember the program to get those nasty polluting inefficient cars off the road? a lot of gas guzzlers went to the scrap heap. #4 labor costs and materials cost more today than before so you get fewer potholes repaired per tax dollar
all of this has contributed to less gallons sold, thus less tax receipts.quote:Originally posted by spasmcreek

Be glad you don't have to buy in WA. Second highest in the nation behind PA. NY is third.

    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

So you add the 19 fed tax to your state tax here its 26 and rising. Gov makes more than the oil company...

    Go figure!

And don't forget sales taxes are added to the total in most states too!

They add insult to injury, then rub salt into the wound.

I live in PA, 15 mi.from the WV border. I fill up every weekend there. .20 to .30 per gallon cheaper. It just depends on what the stations around here are charging as to how much I save.
