Lapband

On the 22nd of this month my wife and I got the lapband. Everything went GREAT. Started out at 270lbs and she was at about 300lbs. Only about a week out I am down to 252 and she is about 273. They say we will drop, but man, it feel good that we made a good choice. They try to get us to do the sleeve, but when we come off the road, our weight should drop faster then setting in the truck.

Has anyone else done the lapband?

Has anyone else done the lapband? I looked into it..but decided to quit eating three meals a day...and started eating small amounts when I get hungry.. dropped 48 lbs in a a year....I guess every one has a different way of doing it...congratulations..

A friend of Jimmy's had it done.....he dropped a LOT of weight. It was shocking to see how fast it happens too. It was like he was melting. I know he had to go in and get it adjusted some because he was having a hard time eating anything at all.

It seems like a nice way to get a GOOD jump on things.

Jimmy's friend has gained some of his weight back though. I don't know him well enough to know what is going on, but it has been at least 5 years since I last saw him....but he is a lot larger than he was.

I thought about trying it myself. Ever since I started working on line and stopped retail I've gained a LOT. I don't know exactly what I'm up to, but I'm guessing I need to lose at least 100 pounds. [V]

Wife had the gastric bypass. I took the class with her before surgery. You MUST stick to a reasonable diet or all your weight plus some is gonna come back. The lap band folks according to the doctor have a higher rate of regaining the weight. Also helps to ditch soda, includes diet soda.

BINGO...ding ding ding...I wonder how many patients five years out have regained most of the weight they lost with the surgery? I personally know three people that lost 100-150 lbs, and were actually skinny and then slowly crept back into their normal lifestyle and after five years have gained virtually all the weight back.

This is a lifestyle issue, if you don't change your lifestyle then you don't fix the problem. Like someone who has financial problems, if you hand them a check and wipe out all their debt, and they don't learn to live differently chances are good then in five years out they will be back in the hole in debt again.

I wish you luck as the weight comes off, but you'll have to be disciplined the rest of your life to keep it off.

Exactly! When I quit smoking many years ago,I gained 60 lbs overnight.....it took me almost a year with a life style change to lose most of the weight gain....by changing my eating habits...I eat several small meals daily, this has shrunk my stomach, and can only hold very small amounts of food... I eat out of saucers most of the time...The hard part is learning when your wife loads your plate, you scrape half of it off...[;)]

I have known two people that had the surgery.

Both lost a lot of weight, and both, within 2 years were back to yo-yo weight loss and gain like before the surgery.

All the best to you spec.4. Once you get to the weight you want to be, be responsible and keep it off.

Don't do it is what I tell anyone.
My wife had it years ago, and while she dropped pounds real fast, she hated the way she looked after. Skin hanging from the bones, throwing up if eating too fast or certain items.

If you want to lose pounds do it the hard and slow way so your body can adjust.

Ask any that had a lapband to take off their clothes wearing only a bikini, see what they say???

Most lapbanders put the pounds back on, by slowly "grazing" more and
more calories so they look and feel better.

I had a co-worker that lost weight from the lapband, basically because he was starving. he vomited virtually everytime he tried to each because they made his stomach too small. He had to have another procedure to fix it, but he still threw up frequently. He is one of the folks that eventually stretched his stomach back out and gained it all back in a few years.

We did our research and went with the lapband because it is reversible. My skin should bounce back and my wife might need to be removed. Once we are off the road, it should be easier for us to maintain our weight. We are not lazy by any means. But when you drive teams, it's eat, sleep and drive.

spec.4 Here's the cold hard truth as I know it. Five years ago I weighted right at 600 lbs. I had a Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass done maybe 20 years ago and lost a bunch of weight but eventually put it back on. Five years ago I could hardly move, would come to work set at my desk and if I needed anything I could not reach I would have someone get it for me. Many times I would think well tomorrow I'm gonna start eating better but it never happened till one day it all came to a head. It involved a girl and my loathing of myself to push me to take action. The difference was this time I said to myself Now right Now I'm am changing this mess not tomorrow , NOW!! I didn't tell anyone just started eating better. In a month folks started noticing. I was dropping a pound a day for a while so it came off fast. Soon I had more energy and started doing simple workouts which I hated. The first workout lasted six minutes and left me on the floor waiting to die. After the first maybe 100 lbs were gone my buddy who owns a mixed martial arts gym came over and would not leave till I agreed to come work out with him. I have never been athletic and never went to gyms but I started working out with him every morning for 30 min. In two years I was at 270, had my brown belt in American kick Boxing and my cardio was better than some of the cross fit folks I worked out with. And I really loved working out. Weight, kick boxing, ocean swims all kinds of stuff. The secret?? Find a group or at least one partner who will push you a little.Working with weights and doing the big body movements is key. Squats beat everything else. Work your legs. Not too much but a little. Start out slow with walking or whatever. By the way, when you are working out you can eat a whole bunch of food if you stay away from bad fats and grains. Fill up on proteins fruits and veggeys. You will need to eat to be able to work out. If I want six eggs that's cool just no the bread. And be careful what food you keep in the house. WATER IS YOUR FRIEND!! It fills you up and most folks are dehydrated so drink a lot of water. Vitamin D is so important so have your's checked. Most folks D is low and you will feel rundown and tired. You've had the surgery so use that as a head start but if you don't get your mind right it will never work. Good luck to you both and remember to take it one day at a time.

that's what I used to tell my friends that said they wanted to lose weight, I said trying to starve yourself is crazy, work out burn calories eat what you want and gain muscle while you're at it, and just like you said skip the fats and soda pop it's only common sense. what I don't get is most of those yoyos already worked out and looked like Hulk Hogan before, so they didn't feel like doing it now?? whatever

Yup, both my cousin Missy and her sister Joann had the lap band. Both are professional fire fighter and bot gained all the weight back. They each weigh over 300 pounds again. They looked bad in a bathing suit and all their skin was flabby. Now both are dieting the right way and doing cardio and looking and feeling much better. I have never heard anything good about the lap band. I weighted a whopping 153 pounds four years ago when I broke my back. From the surgeries and steroid shots, I ballooned to 210. I cannot lose any weight at this point. All I eat is healthy foods and only eat twice a day. Breakfast I have oatmeal, and for dinner, small portions. Doctor said it will almost be impossible to loose the weight I want to, but I might look at some kind of surgery. I am only doing it because I am self conscience about how I look to my customers. I will not get the lap band. Oakie

My wife had it and has gained everything back. Last Sept I was 306 and decided that was too much. Changed my eating habits and do a lot of walking and doing little things like parking at the far end of the parking lot and I'm slowly losing but I'm down to 255 and losing about a pound a month yet

Yes, parking at the far end of the parking lot and taking stairs it all adds up. The important thing is to move.

I have seen good and bad on the lapband, It's a tool just like a GPS, it's a tool to help lose weight, You need to change the way you eat and listen to your body.

I have seen a girl went from 350 to 150 in about 2 years with it. She still have it off. Then I have seen another girl get it down and weight more then she was before the band.

Someone say park in the back of the truckstop, done it. But when your truck does not stop but a few hours a day, you really can do much.

I think the main thing is, you two push each other.

My wife and I quit smoking that way.

I was given the choice of surgery, or starting to get serious about being a less Full-Figured Guy. Surgery seemed a bit overboard, so I started eating better...and less.

The Orthopedic surgeon said I have to lose 100 lbs before he would replace a knee should I get to needing one. Since I know they are both on borrowed time, I figured I better get on it.

Down about 35 lbs since February, the weight is still coming off, and I feel better. Just got my latest lipid panel results back, and my cholesterol is down to 171 from the 245 it was in February. LDL down to 96 from 163. Something must be working.

Whatever method you use, it has to be a decision you make, and the effort must be your's. The rest is just a tool.

Good luck, Spec.4 Keep us posted.
