Internet Locked Up!

I opened my browser, opened a couple of sites and then a site automatically appeared warning me that my computer is infected with spyware and malware and to call a number. Obviously a scam or something. I tried to close the site, no luck. tried to close the browser, no good. So I called the number. Guy claims that his company has Microsoft trained technicians and wants to run a scan on my PC. I kept telling him to unlock my internet. Reluctantly, I consent to the scan. (Yeah, yeah I knew I shouldn't have.) He shows me that I have a large number of "Critical" events, Windows Task Manager to show the reason my computer runs slow, and then some other window saying some hackers in a foreign country have hacked my computer, and he can take care of it for only $149 for a year's worth of service. Did I mention the "Microsoft trained technician" had a heavy foreign accent of some kind?
Of course I said no. Told him that a friend is an IT manager for the Government and could help me. Took several times before he accepted that I wasn't going to pay him for anything. I found that my internet access was freed up.
Then something stirred in my mind and went to the help key and searched for "delete spyware". Eventually, I ran my own scan. The Microsoft program searched every file and concluded that I had no spyware.
If you encounter something similar, try rebooting to see if they "locked" your internet. Perhaps rebooting will work.
It would be a good idea to run your own scan to see if you have a spyware problem. It can scan while you do something else (bid on the GB auctions you've been watching). While you're at it you could de-frag your hard drive so your system will work a bit better (don't ask me how it'll be better).

Gotta watch those "porn" sites [:0][B)][:D]
That's why I was so angry.[:(!][:(!][:(!] I couldn't get to a porn site, not even the porn posts on GB! [;)]
'Jim' sounded a lot like 'Haji' and got madder and madder when he started to figure out that I was funnin' with him. He seemed upset that i wasted a 1/2 hour of his time.
'Jim' had a really difficult time explaining why it was he was telling me that I needed to buy some high zoot upgrade to MS Security Essentials, when the 'alert' was telling me that "Norton Macafee" had found all the problems. 'Jim' was confused when I asked whether Norton bought Macafee or visa versa.
'Jim' also couldn't explain why the 'Alerts' I sometimes get from the 'AOL Customer Service Team' use gmail accounts.
'Jim' really wasn't very helpful, but he was entertaining.
