The eye doctor will dilate the pupils of the eyes to get a better look
inside the eye and aid in getting the prescription right.
For several hours after the drops are applied any little bit of light is too much. Sunglasses are a must have.
I usually have the wife go with me so she can drive home.
I'm pretty sure that these drops have been around for awhile and have been used in various "operations" prior to night vision optics.
Focus is a problem when eyes are dilated, maybe not so at night.
