The TV crew cried foul, and pushed back against the price. Eventually, the clerk admitted the room rates were much higher than usual. ?Weekends start at $149, sometimes we start at $189,? the clerk told KXAN.

?But, why is it so much?? KXAN reporter Wes Rapaport asked of the $321.89 charge.

I have no problem with the jacking the price for a news crew, so long as the don't for folks that actually need the room.

Price gouging is illegal in texas and they will go after any people or business who are guilty.

    https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/cpd/price-gouging

Rooms for rent are not specifically mentioned. Food, gas, medicine, OR OTHER NECESSITY. Is a room a necessity?

Wouldn't want to argue the point in a court of law.

An $89 room in the afternoon may be $179 at 10pm when it is the last room. That is normal, business as usual for any hotel chain. Prices can change several times over an hour. Now ... $321 ... A master suite, that's cheap.

The hotel may have a published range of rates.

Don't gouge, just put it up for bid and let the market decide what it is worth.

    Happens every day here right?

I agree with the other poster, I don't mind gouging the press, but not a misplaced resident. I think the press is just wasting what little gas, food and rooms are available, they bring a van, let them live in it.

I saw an interview with the spokesperson for the Texas AG last night. He said price gouging will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. $20k per occurrence, $250k if the victim is over the age of 65.

I'm pretty sure hotel room rates just like parking for special events can be jacked around for any price they want. It happens here for a lot of events. A normal parking space down town priced at $4 a day becomes a $20 spot during a special event. Same thing with hotel rates. When there is a big event in town hotel rooms go for a premium. I know that because I work in one. Now had that news crew booked a year in advance of the storm it would have been a different story.
