Just ordered the galaxy 979f for my pickup...should arrive in two days....finally getting to upgrade from my little starter CB that is 8 years old now.

Use to be couple of places that sold CB's on the web that would tune and peaked them if you ask at the time of purchase.
The last CB I had was on old 29 Classic. The funniest I had was an old Realistic with dual 40 channels. You could talk on one channel and receive on another. Get two people with them and it sounded like you were talking to youself to everyone listening.
Good units. Did you have it tuned and peaked?

No, if I feel the need I will tune it myself. To many hack shops out there who don't know what they are doing. Fortunately I have access to some really good radio diagnostic equipment that I can use during lunch at work.
Now I just can't decide if I will run a Wilson 5k or a 9 foot stainless whip. It will be on the top of my cab.
One of them shill's made to kind of imitate SANYO
This would have been late 70's, early 80's
If it's going on the roof of your cab, go with the Wilson.
The whip will give better ears, but not if you hang it up in a drive thru.
RatShack used to sell a bottom loaded "off road" whip that screws right onto the big magnets you see at truck stops, more flexible than the 1/4 wave whip, and not as long.
I rigged up an 18' co-phase harness to a piece of pipe, and mounted 2 6' Ugly Stiks for my pickup; much better directional propagation with a quiet spot in back.
Really? does anyone use CB any more? not a put down, I am curious, seems even truckers use sat phones and don't modulate anymore.
It's extremely popular in oklahoma still and I have found it to be very useful for the areas that don't have service.
Right now I'm running a fairly simple Galaxy 99V2 multi band with AM, FM and SSB. Radio is tuned to low power of a 1.5W dead key swinging around 50W to run the Texas Star 250DX and on high will dead key around 30W and over 50W swing, radio sounds better on low. It has all the toys, echo, robot voice (never used) and that damned beep which is never used.
Setup runs through Wilson co-phase 18' coax and a pair of Wilson 2000 antennas that are tuned to a flat SWR on channel 20 and will easily safely work to about 40 above and 20 below 11M. I've ran both single and dual antennas on a truck and am well aware of the arguments of running a single. A truck acts like a beam and while a single is more efficient you will find weak spots when using a FS meter and walking around the truck, fecieve is much better on duals.
With this setup and when the conditions are right I've talked all over the US and Canada. Above 40 on SSB with the little Texas Star CQing 2000 miles is as easy as talking across town. Am considering getting with the ARRL and finaly after a lifetime of illegaly chatting on 10M making myself legal since the licenses have changed and code is no longer needed to use 10M.
While this setup isn't all that big it is far more user friendly, easier on the batteries and I don't need to run a modulator to drive a Sweet Sixteen anymore.
Lookin for a west bounder on this 40, hello come in...
Been playing with CBs since I was a kid, first radio was a Teaberry 23 channel base station using a 5/8 groundplane antenna. Since then I've run things like Heathkits, Browning Golden Eagles, many Cobra, President, Kenwood exports, modified Yaesus, Galaxy and several other export and modified 11M radios. Never really worried about FCC or anything else.

So what does a set up like that cost?

I don't know what he paid for it...but his would cost around 6-8 hundred depending on location, who tuned it for him and the quality of his coax. Mine when all is said and done will be just a shade under 400. But I will be running a top dog radio with a top quality antenna, premium coax and some other...peripherals.[;)]
You can actually get a "decent" (5 or less miles) setup on a vehicle for less than a hundred bucks....maybe even a "good" (5-8 miles) setup if you find a good antenna at a garage sale or the like.
I have roughly $600 in the entire setup.
You gotta shop smart, antennas and coax by Wilson both bought on Amazon for roughly 30% cheaper than truckstops, Turner mic bought on Amazon for 50% less than truckstops. Radio bought in Gary Indiana and tuned by that shop, Texas Star bought in Phoenix and radio matched/tuned together.
I have roughly $600 in the entire setup.
Heck considering you got your peripheral tuned as well as a power mic you got a great deal!....I was looking at my dash and it turns out I will have to do some more modification/turning to my dash than I originally anticipated. I have time though as I still have to get my new antenna but that will have to wait till next month. I will be doing a CLEAN dash install in a Toyota Tacoma..
I know nothing about CBs, but wanted one for my ride for survival sits, wrecks etc...I wouldn't want to spend more than $400
You could get a cobra 148GTL with SSB capability and a good antenna for that price....probably get you around 15 miles range with that setup...definitely would be less than 400.

I was looking at a Galaxy DX959 on ebay that comes performance tuned form the seller. looks like a busy cb shop seller.
So waht are good antennas? Back in the day I had a K40
Two sellers recommended Wilson 5000, and one said Firestik 1

The 959 is basically the same as the 979 with some extra bells and whistles that are very nice. It's slightly larger as well. These idea a guy running one in my area and he sounds strong and clear all over the page.
I got the 979 as its very similar but smaller for in dash installs.
I will be getting a wilson 5k myself as they are very nice. I have seen the Wilson 1000 also work very well with long distant setups.

He claims it is barefoot and that he has a really really nice Base station antenna setup.

You liked what you said so much you quoted yourself!!
The only issue for me with the Wilson 5000 mag mount is that I park in a garage so roof mount is a no go. I am thinking the firestik on a spring mount on my front brush guard or hood mount. That way I won't have clearance issues.

Lol...sorry about that....I once had a a firestick that was about 4 feet I had mounted of the swing tire carrier on my old zr2 blazer....it worked pretty well.
I have a 959 Galaxy, peaked and tuned with a Conex echo board installed. Interested? If so let me kmow and I'll list it for you. I also have another 959 parts radio that has a channel mod done to it.
I might take you up on that!! I tried to email you through GB but it didn't work. Let me see what kind of toy money I have at the end of this week!
Still can't beat the Rat Shack power Mike without going to a D-104.
Might want to take a look at the Copper Electronics website; many radios, peaking/tuning, antennae & peripherals at excellent prices.

Checking their site out now, thanks for the recommendation
