I was reading this article, and found that although I'm a super owner, I don't follow the trend of buying the new stuff. If it wasn't for older guns I wouldn't have much of a collection. How do you fit in to this story??

This is pretty baffling to me, on so many levels

"How many guns does one need?

As far as need goes, according to Fortune, the average "super-owner" owns 17 guns already. And here you have to ask yourself "why?"

Is it because the gun-ownerneeds 17 guns, or because he likes buying guns? Because once you've got your range pistol, your concealed carry, your shotgun for home defense, and your .22 for plinking, I rather suspect you've moved beyond "need" and started to wander into "want" territory. If gun owners simply like buying guns, then that's not something that's likely to change."

Let's just ignore the whole "need" thing.

But um there are so many other uses for firearms than what is listed, it's no wonder they're baffled by folks who own more than 17 guns. If you can't even identify more than four reasons to own a gun, perhaps you shouldn't be talking about the subject.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

When did gun ownership become about need? After the first one it was always about want with me.

If "17" constitutes a "Super owner." I wonder what they would consider me??

(Or probably most of you, as well.)

The reason I own guns and buy guns is to keep them out of the hands of people that should not have them. [:D][:D][:D]

That was actually the point the writer was making. Sure the writer is a bit clueless on all the needs a person might buy a gun for. But that doesn't change the point they were making.

If you read the article for what it is, the future of gun sales, there's some interesting information in it. I think some of the numbers are not accurate but that's what was available.

What if owning large numbers of firearms is akin to a therapy dog? Would that constitute "need"?

Funny, when I collected coins no one ever asked me if I had "too many".

Owning more than 17 is probably a bit excessive.

Sitting with a couple at our kids' ball game once, he and I got to talking about guns. He had just bought his first pistol and was talking about another one he wanted. She said "why do you need more than one?" I looked at her, she was wearing three or four rings, had a couple of bracelets on, and a necklace. I asked her how many rings and bracelets she had, and why did she need more than one. She didn't say anything else.[8D]

I guess I hold up my share. I bought one new gun before I was 70 years old and that was a shotgun for my son. Since then I've bought three, all ARs. Obama and Hillary made me do it.[}:)]

My wife doesn't need a car that will go 128 miles an hour but the one she has in our garage will do that. Could have bought her one that would go 200 if we had the money and the inclination. No background check or special driver training needed to buy it.

The article is typical. A stock analyst who knows nothing about an industry spends a week or so studying that industry. Talks to some folks, reads some stuff, and in no time they're an expert. Then they write an article. Someone who knows nothing about the industry proof reads it and it gets published. Sometimes a smart analyst gets it right, shows real insight. Other times the article is comical. This one is the later.
