Those cool looking uppers

The AR uppers with the rails at 12-3-6-9 O'clock.

They are a PIA and hands.

All those rails might be useful to mount your bicycle inner tube pump, handy home wrecking ball kit, portable microwave, flashlight, fishing pole, and camp stove set but they sure are hard on your hands.

Trying to shoot with all those pointy rail gaps poking your palm and fingers is especially hard in the cold. Now I need to find a RAIL-LESS hand guard for this rifle. My GF can pack all the other stuff, including sleeping bags, beer, water, Coleman lantern and steaks. I'll carry the rifle. [:D]

You need the soft rubber pads that snap in places where you haven't mounted your forehand grip, your side light, your EoTech with 3x Magnifier and your laser.

    They actually work quite well.

Edit: Yes, like the pads BigOutside Posted.

I can't figure out WTH those 4 rail hand guards are supposed to accomplish. They look like some sort of Klingon battle weapon.

I am pretty sure they are useful for the same thing as chrome on an engine.

I have some like this that are easy to cut for where you need them, I may try some of those thicker ones as well.

I ordered the rubber ones, I'll let you all know how they work.

    Thanks Don and Bigoutside!

Agreed. The cost was the limiting factor. Would have preferred a round free-float hand guard with the ability to mount short rail sections only where needed. One for the front sight, one for the grip. Just couldn't bring myself to spend half the cost of the rifle for one, back when I was shopping.

It is uncomfortable without rubber covers or the vertical grip. Plus you end up with much of the weight of the quad-rail being wasted.

There are a lot of good options. You can get the pads, which I personally like a lot, mount a grip, or wear shooting gloves, which are a good idea even with the other options and are particularly useful in the cold for other tasks as well.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

I have had quad rails of previous rifles and did not like them for the same reason, however I liked being about to mount my sling, light and AFG. So I found the below item and have it on my Colt 6920 and am very pleased with it. It is the benefits of a traditional hand guard with rails to accommodate my light on one side, sling on the other and AFG below with no sharp edges. plus it is polymer so it isn't heavy like some of the quad rails.

I rarely have stuff mounted on them other then a scope or an occasional flash light. The thing is you have numerous mounting options IF the need arises.

OR Man up, get some callouses on your hands and quit whining.
    Works for me ;)

Maybe the types but the one I have, the only time the rails bother me is when I am tightening or loosening the hand rail, like when the antiseize on the suppressors threads lasts longer than the antiseize where it goes on the barrel

There's all sorts of good things you can do with quad rails on an AR but if you have chosen to hate them because you are old fashioned go ahead[;)] Its a free country.

    That's awesome!
Hey, at least it would offer a slight amount of ballistic protection. If you were strong enough to hold it up in front of you.
