One spike tonight

Saw just one small spike tonight. The smoke was gone. Deer walked within ten yards of me. I started talking to it and it just stood there looking, not even afraid. It walked off after about ten to fifteen minutes. The spike were about 2 to 3 inches. Must have been a yearling. Nothing else to report. My bud killed an 11 at daybreak. He saw about 15 bucks and twenty to thirty doe's. They were being chased by the fire. Oakie

You probably passed on the best eating. You can boil those horns for hours and they dont improve. And with one hand you dont want a running shot.

Daughters boyfriend got a spike over the weekend. Just as she was getting the picture, I looked out back and there was a nice 8 point chasing a doe around the fairway. I did not manage to grab a camera in time to get a pic.

We have a lot of small spikes here with about 2-3" horns still covered in white velvet. DNR Officer said that they are impotent and will never breed.

Our rifle buck and one of our doe seasons are running together this year. So we can kill either one. Personally I would take a doe before I would a small young buck. We have way to many doe in this area and they need to be thinned out. It is nothing to see 150 to 200 deer in the three mile stretch of dirt road leading to the farm. And last Summer I bet I did not see more than 25 young fawns all summer. 10 or so years ago you would see 9 out 10 does with at least one fawn.

Just about the entire state of Michigan will not let you take a spike horn deer. The three on one side rule has me looking through binoc's so much that I'm going cross eyed!

If you have a doe permit you can still take a "button" buck and tag it with that permit.
