    How smart are the folks that buy them. Sure they cost $6,000 less than my Cruze. But the Cruze gets Better Mpg. Smart Car is 44/38. Mine on the Freeway is 45 and with a mix of driving still get 40.

    Smart car you also need to use premium.

    I don't like the Smart cars, but it's going to take a long time for that 1 mpg advantage to eat up a 6k difference in initial price.

    You mean those things actually have motors (gas, I won't stoop to calling them engines, GTOs had engines) in them? I thought they were just electric cars- Wow, the people that buy them are stupider than I thought, but then they did elect what we have, twice- so as Tom Hanks said...

    If they was real smart, they wouldn't even drive on the roads around here.

    Look like fun toys but don't see what's "Smart" about them. Plenty of little four door sedans getting decent gas mileage, have more cargo space and are more stable on the road.

    Company my son worked at for several years furnished him a SmartCar. He liked it. He drove about 150-200 miles a day mostly on Interstates. No problems, got about 45 MPG but co. paid for everything anyway. Although I worried about the safety of it, they do really well in crash tests.

    But then I still feel great driving this car and I'm sure there would be no getting me in that little car. Might even tip it over just trying to get in.

    If I lived in a town and stayed in town, I wouldn't have a problem with one. But I wouldn't want to take one out on the highway. You have to figure there's probably more safety engineering in that car than every car made in 1963. Which means seatbelts. I remember the Renault Gordini. That was a small car. I wonder how many bodies came out of those in pieces.

    There is an old "man" in town that drives a pink smart car. I can't see anything smart about any of it. Sure it gets good gas mileage but ..............................

    I would love to see the left/right leanings on the ownership of these. I'd bet 95% or more of the owners are libs that "feel" good about owning one. Rather than asking "If I get in a crash, how will this perform..."

    Americans didn't get the message: Smart cars were designed for European cities, where parking is extremely difficult. You can park 3 of them in the space needed to park an Accord. In Rome, I see them parked bumper against the curb, which is legal.

    There's no reason to buy one in this country. They aren't cheap, they don't carry much, they aren't safe, & the gas mileage is not as good as a Prius.

    If you're an American, & you bought a smart car, here's your sign.

    "Smart Car" - a misnomer if there ever was one! Neal is correct though. The first ones I saw were in Munich and they were parked with the bumper against the curb.
    It's too late for me, save yourself.

    I just can't see how Smart tempting death in a fender bender is.

    Save a few bucks on Gas for a better Headstone , I guess

    You have a diesel Cruze right? About 26000+ dollars. I have a Nissan Versa with a CVT gets 37+ on gas mileage! Price on drive out 15,000 with all other fees included in that price. No additives for clean diesel either or regeneration burning.

    The CVT has the same rpms configurations as my diesel truck 1500 to 3000! With that kind's of rpms the engine should last for 300,000 miles plus!

    Smart cars are a fad. No trunk and no space in the cab and a death trap!

    No, they cut some really cool donuts in parking lots, I have seen the video. Thankfully I did not see the video of one rear-ending a semi.

    Agree Mine is the Diesel. The way it runs sit should last a while. Not sure what the RPMS those smart cars run at, But it seems every time I run into one it is going the same Direction as me and they are almost always 10 -15 MPH below the speed limit.

    Passed one that was what made me look them up for this topic. He was going 40 in a 55.

    Looks like you have to rev it to get anywhere.

    quote:I took the car out tonight and with nothing better to do, recorded speeds and rpm's and drove at varying levels of performance - so here's the result; (close approximations) (manual shift mode was used)

    Max speed shifting at close to redline (6000 rpm);
    first gear - 28 mph (45 kph)
    second gear - 50 mph (80 kph)
    third gear - 68 mph (110 kph)
    fourth gear - 94 mph (150+ kph) max speed governed

    slowest logical speed shift points (shifts at about 3000 rpm):
    first gear - 12 mph (20 kph)
    second gear - 25 mph (40 kph)
    third gear - 37 mph (60 kph)
    fourth gear - 50 mph (80 kph)

    slow (casual) speed shift points (shifts at about 3500 rpm);
    first gear - 16 mph (25 kph)
    second gear - 28 mph (45 kph)
    third gear - 40 mph (65 kph)
    fourth gear - 55 mph (90 kph)

    Good performance (keeping ahead of traffic) shift points (4000 rpm);
    first gear - 20 mph (30 kph)
    second gear - 35 mph (55 kph)
    third gear - 50 mph (80 kph)
    fourth gear - 60 mph (100 kph)

    And doing that would kill the Mileage.

    Smart Car crash test at 70mph into 20 tons of concrete road barrier:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnI-LiKCtuE

    The passenger compartment survives remarkably well. Although at that speed any instant stop would kill the people inside no matter what. Your soft organs cannot tolerate all that instantaneous deceleration.

    While the car's claims of a tough box around the passengers seems true enough, I don't want one. Just do not see a practical application for me.

    For commuting to work I at least want the cargo capacity of a four door sedan, even a compact. Also makes it possible to help out when co-workers want to escape the factory for an "off Site Engineering Meeting (a.k.a. "lunch") [8D]

    Bought a '63 Gordini with sliding windows that actually RAN for $65 one summer; well, I paid $32.50 & my roommate paid the other $32.50, since we were never going to register it, & just drive it to college, then burn it.
    There's a "Smart"car dealership in the old EasyRiders building, guess we know what sells...
