Who Has Eaten a Death Dog?

Ever eat something that is so good that you never forget it and every time you eat it, you're transported back to a wonderful time? Bread pudding, mint Christmas cake are a couple of them. Death Dogs are another.

In the Navy there are gedunks and coffee messes where sailors can get drinks, sweets, coffee, and all manner of sardines, vienna sausage, and the like.

Most airdales (Aviation sailors) have endless variations of hot dog and chili combinations.
I had an urge for a Death Dog and here's the recipe I made this one from:

Hot dog
Bun
Onion
Sauerkraut
Chili
Ketchup
Mustard
Sweet relish
Cheddar cheese

The presentation is as much fun as eating it. It's like a ship on a sea of chili. Damn these are good! Some things just never go out of style and I bet in coffee messes all around the world, you can still get one just like this.
Bon appetit mateys!

Wish I could post you a picture. It was good!

Used to eat 'em like that quite frequently,..minus the relish and ketchup with that combo.

The sweetness of those two ingredients didn't mesh with the rest for me.

Oh yeah, some FE's were known for it. The skipper of VP-48 put the word out if he was on the flight schedule, only chili without beans could be served that day. [}:)][:p]

The popularity of all those condiments was to cover up the nasty taste of the tripe, cow butts, intestines, chicken feathers, bone chunks, and pork * holes used to make a "hot dog"[}:)][:0]

Brookwood is much happier eating his oatmeal. With its rodent hairs, feces, insect parts, fly larvae, and dirt.

While I'm at it, what's with the fascination some people have with animal *, huh? Some deep-seated longing?
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Hey Brookwood: if ya eat Hebrew National, there ain't any of that in em. They only use parts in front of the diaphragm.

I usually spiral slice 'em, cook 'em till nicely mottled Brown, and then roll 'em up with Tillamook Cheddar, Claussen Dill Pickle Extra Garlic Slices, French's Yellow Mustard, Some Best Foods Mayo, and a nice Dollop of Pace Chipotle Salsa, using a big burrito size Flour Tortilla. Sometimes Twice, when I am hungry.

That does sound like a good dog, but I can't eat them any more. I stopped eating foods that have ingredients I can't pronounce. Found I feel better eating food without all the additives and preservatives.

I sure do miss a good hot dog though....

I'll be eating Dogs sauteed in butter till browned. (Oscar Meyer whole beef.)

On whole wheat bread, with fresh cut onions, sliced/diced fresh from the garden hot peppers, French's mustard, fresh prepared Southern Slaw,(Mmmnnn Slaw dogs.) with a side of Macaroni and Southern Potato salad for dinner tonight.

Side of thin sliced Sharp cheddar cheese.

    Long live the Dog!!

Sorry fella's, been deprived of my morning joe for the last week or so and it is starting to get to me.

To be honest, for dinner I'm going to be eating Kogel brand hot dogs cooked until nearly black on my gas grill.

Wrapped up in a bun and topped with Bush's Best pork & beans that I was supposed to either throw away or take back to the store on account of a new kind of recall.
Mustard, my own homemade dill pickle and chased down with an ice cold PBR. And that's the truth![:p]

Sauerkraut goes on a brat, not a hot dog, loose the ketchup and use only Dusseldorf mustard.

I can't deal with ketchup on a dog but other than that - OK. BTW, there are different hot dog buns. In New England it looks like two short bread slices joined at the bottom. Joined until you cram the dog down deep for toppings then the damn thing splits.

Speaking of gedunk, my grandfather did 33 years in the Navy including all of WWII. He was online with a fellow Officer when an LT or Captain type tried to jump line, push around the enlisted, something you just didn't do. As it happened Grandpa's friend growled "end of the line!!!". When the indignant LT turned around, looking to slam whomever dared question him, he saw a pissed off Bill Halsey staring back, reminding him stars or bars don't count on the gedunk line.

That is a very well known story throughout the Navy. It was a couple of junior officers. Bull was waiting in the ice cream line just like everyone else. He's considered the same with the Navy as Chesty Puller is with the Jarheads. A Marines Marine and a Sailors Sailor.

You guys are all missing the best thing to do with them.

Fry them in butter, not Pam but real butter. Cook up a batch of either Kraft Mac & Cheese or Ramen noodles. Cut up the dogs into 1" chunks and mix them into the noodles. Just a notch above Spam but delicious!!

So long story but humor me-
This is late nighties, maybe the year 2000. After a long cruise the USS John C Stennis pulls into Perth Australia.

As it is a Nuclear carrier we drop anchor a few miles from shore and ride these really nice boats from the carrier into Perth.

While onboard this boat they are selling beer and hotdogs, I order one of each, and they ask if I'd like "weak American Mustard" or a proper Australian hotdog?

Now it's USA vs. Australia and I must accept the Australian hotdog. They cover it in what I can only describe as the most intense mixture of Horseradish and ginger root I have ever encountered. My eyes water, my sinuses are in shock, and this is damn near a foot long hotdog covered in this stuff.

Each bite is more intense than the last, and the Aussies on the boat are saying I can quit anytime. Again, Australia vs USA I must finish the hotdog.

After the last bite and probably several beers the Aussies are amazed- they play this trick on everyone and NOONE had ever finished the damn thing before.

So the aussies awarded me with a little gold pin in the shape of Australia and announced I had been awarded "The Australian Medal of Honor".
