I want to go up in magnifacation and clarity from my 3-9 Leupold VX2, I was looking at Leupold VX3 4x14.5x40 30mm tube side focus for about 650.00 or Vortex Viper HS 4x16x44 30mm tube side focus for about 450.00 anybody have a another brand to recomend or experience with these scopes? This is my primary deer rifle I hunt Coues deer (small target)and most shots are at 300 to 500 yds.

I love my big Leupold variables. Have several 6.5 to 20's. You can't go wrong with one. The 4.5 to 14 sounds perfect for your application. For long range shooting Leupold can install an elevation knob (target style) with 1/4 MOA markings. Coupled with a drop chart these make 1st shot on target possible.

I have the Leupy you memtion on my 257 Wby with a Boone and Crocket reticle and love it. In fact I'm going to get another one for a new 300 Win.

I am leaning toward the Leupold even though it costs more. Toad67 your 257 is a perfect caliber for Coues deer here. Im shooting a 270 which does a good job on them.

Go to a large gun store with a stock and scope holder designed for comparing scopes. Compare several scopes, look into dark areas of shadow for detail. Really LOOK hard at a distant object, switch back and forth between scopes. Your eye will SEE the difference. It is one reason I still buy Burris Signature scopes, even used ones.

The only thing I found better, until you get to Nightforce and the like was the Diamond series, by Burris. [:)]

    steve45,

While I know you said the $500.00-600.00 range, for about 100.00 more you can get the Vortex Viper PST. I have those on 4 of my rifles, and love them. They are comparable to the Leupold Mark 4's, IMHO.

Another, that appears to be extremely clear are the Nikon Monarch 3's, and now the 7's. They do not have all the bells and whistles like the Vortex scope I described, most importantly the target turrets.
