Each 1890 was chambered for a specific round and they are not interchangeable. It seems most were .22 short or .22 long; somewhat fewer were .22 WRF. Only in the last few years of production were some made for the .22 long rifle and they bring a premium.
Best
The carrier is the exact right length to only function with .22 Long ammo. All other cartridges, Short, Long Rifle, or WRF will not feed and should not be used.
Just recently a gunsmith told me he alters the carrier to handle different length cartridges.
I'd try shooting the 22lr in rechambered 22l before messing with the leade which likely advanced from black powder and lots of shooting.
He also told me of altering a 22wrf to magnum that worked out well.
I wouldn't do it because of jacketed bullets and soft barrel steel not in fear of that strong action.
CCI still makes .22 Long ammo to the best of my knowledge. Not too easy to find but it is available.
You are correct. A lot of .22 Long ammo showed up on shelves during the Drought of 2013. I think CCI must have searched its vaults for every round of .22 rimfire ammo on hand.
