I have one in 300WSM with a after market Timney trigger ,before the accutrigger was factory
It has been the perfect using rifle for me on Whitetail Deer until a few years ago I went to fire it and it misfired so I worked the bolt back about half way to make sure I had a cartridge loaded and it did so I closed the bolt back and it then fired when I pulled the trigger like it was supposed to
well this season the same scenario happened
should I just get in the habit of loading the rifle and then working the bolt back halfway and then closing it or should I dig deeper and fix the gun[?]
Is this common with bolt action rifles[?]

Reprime some of your empties and investigate the rifle. Clean the inside of the bolt making sure the striker can fully move forward all the way.
No, this is not common with bolt action rifles but it can occur occasionally. Usually the trigger and the firing pin spring are dirty or gunky (technical term...) from fouling mixed with lubricant.
Savages are fairly simple to disassemble for cleaning. Find a breakdown drawing and give it a try. Or if you'd rather, have your local gunsmith take a careful look at the entire rifle to see if there is something more dastardly at work.
Best.
