Anyone have a Beretta 318 (Bantam)?

This little .25 has been in a desk drawer for over 10 years and I cleaned it. When I reassembled it, it was dificult. The recoil spring rod I wasn't sure if it is installed with the safety in the on position where the rear end of the rod abuts up aginst the safety, or the safety in the off position. The problem here is that the slide is extremely hard to retract; I can't use the thumb and forefinger against the serrations at the rear of the slide and pull it back, tho I don't have weak hands. I have to cup my hand over the slide and pull it back to slide lock. Can anyone explain the correct way to assemble the pistol after I have field stripped it. Thanks in advance.
