Serial number on S&W boxes??

Hi, experts. In pre-War years Colt used to put the serial number on the bottom of the gun box. Question: Did Smith & Wesson put the serial number on the bottom of their pre War red/maroon boxes, or their post War gold color boxes? Thanks Jim
