Colt Python Date of Manufacture?

edited February 2012 in Ask the Experts
Local person has a Colt Python for sale, bluing is 98%, not the original grips, no box, 6" barrel, 357 Mag, serial V54984. He is asking $1300 for it which seems high.
Can someone tell me what year it was made?
Thanks.

Yes $1300 seems a little high for a 98% blued 6in. without the original grips.
$1100 sounds about right to me.
1980 is near the hieght of production numbers for the Python.
The blued 6in seems to go for less than the others.
I believe 99%+ all original boxed ones go for $1500-1700.
Without the correct grips and no box I would deduct about $500.

I am not sure. But I believe the correct grips are the same as what my 1981 has.
    3rd gen.wood.
    Around $300.
    See GB item#274692826.
If there is no muzzle wear or dull areas on the blueing and the 98% is due to a few barely noticed scratches it may be worth bargaining for.
As you may already know,Python values have doubled in the past 2-3 years.
    EDIT:1sgret...I believe you are correct
Anyone know if the 1979s had the same style(3rd gen)grips as my 1981 came with?

    CS8161,

    I think the year of manufacture was 1979 (# V88374 - # V88373)
