M 1 carbine questions

I have an M 1 carbine made by national postal meter. #4,351,xxx. Can anyone give me some info about the company, how many they made, years of mfg.?? Also what to look for to determine if it is original or reconditioned? Last-- ball park value, rated at 90% blue and few dings in stock?? Thanks

A detailed history of any M1 carbine manufacturer is beyond the scope of this forum; it is covered in several copyright-protected publications. There were several companies involved with NPM carbines, & parts were swapped between manufacturers. There were approximately 413,000 NPM carbines made; like all other USGI M1 carbines, they were made during WWII. You can get all the details in Bruce N. Canfield's book, Complete Guide to the M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine.

There are too many variables for us to tell you if it is original, especially without a photo. You should get a copy of Craig Riesch's US M1 Carbines Wartime Production; it describes every part in detail.

Since most carbine parts were parkerized, if yours is 90% blue, then it has been commercially refinished, & is worth no more than $300-400. But, if you really meant "parkerized", then it is worth in the $300-1,500 range.
