Help needed to convince a friend

I need help to convince my friend his gun is a shooter and handloading probably will not improve his accuracy. Ok? His gun is an AK 47 (not known for great accuracy). Shooting offhand at 100 yards with iron sights and surplus ammo, he was shooting 6 inch groups (3 shots). He was upset and said the gun was a piece of junk and that maybe handloading would help. I was shooting my bolt action off a rest and so I offered to shoot his AK off my sandbags. Off the rest, with iron sights, and the same surplus ammo I was shooting 1 1/2 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards. I told him that his gun was a real shooter and that 1 1/2 inch was great accuracy for an AK and that handloading probably would not improve the group much. There is a lot of wisdom and experience in this forum, love to hear your thoughts, but please remember I will be showing him this thread. Thanks!

IMHO handloading for an AK, he would not gain much accuracy at all. It might tighten groups a little but not enough to justify the time and effort it would take to work up a load. Handloading would not be out of the question if he wants to, cause there is a chance it could save him some $$$, but handloading for accuracy is not lookin to good for his weapon of choice.

I think that inch and a half is a good group. Too many cases of loaded ammunition out there to handload this cartridge. Sounds like you might need to help him shoot better instead of him wanting to handload the round.

Or he can get rid of the ak and get something he can shoot better.

Six inch groups offhand is not bad.
It means, dead guy, dead guy, dead guy.
And 1 1/2 inch groups off the bench, what more do you want?

If he wants 5/8 inch groups from a milsurp, he needs a Swede Mauser.

It sound likethe AK is just right maybe a little beter than mine. Handloading I think for an AK is a waste of time.

He thinks a 1 inch group would be good. I think 1 1/2 inch with iron sights is outstanding from an AK.

From reading a large number of gun related magazines, I see new production bolt action rifles topped with name brand scopes that will not shoot better than 1 1/2 inch 3 shot groups off the bench. Generally these rifles are anywhere in price from $500.00 to $3000.00.

If he can hold and shoot a 6" group offhand at 100 yards with iron sights, he is a better shooter than 95% of the shooting population. Most shooters can not hold their shots on a 10" paper plate at 100 yards offhand.

But if he really wants to get rid of the rifle, he could always have a giveaway.[;)]

you buy a hotdog you get a hotdog. He got what he bought and he got a good one to boot. Tell him a ak is a shtf gun. Not a CZ

Tell him also that no one shoots for groups offhand at 100 yards. All 'shooting for groups' I"ve heard of or done is off of sandbags or a rest of some sort.
If your groups did not convince him,he's just being bull headed for some reason.
I'd take that 1 1/2" group any day from any of my guns.
