Mosin Nagant M44 safety

I purchased an M44 carbine yesterday, and I am having trouble getting the safety to work. I knew they were going to be tough to pull back on, but not that tough. Is there a way I can fix this myself or will I have to go bring it to a gunsmith and get it loosened.

The Russkies made 'em reliable, and made 'em pretty accurate, and made many millions of 'em, guess it was too much for them to design a good safety.
If you want a good safety, get a Mauser.
I may be wrong but I think it's the hammer spring that the safety mechanism pulls against. "Loosening" it probably isn't an option.
He is right here, loosening is not an option.
dppatrol, what you are talking about is actually decocking it, not using the safety. The cocking piece has to actually be pulled back against the piring pin spring and turned to engage the safety.
Get into your time machine, set it for 1891, and meet up with Mr. Mosin and Mr. Nagant in the bar, and sketch your "safety ring" on a cocktail napkin.
