Modify 30-06 to 25-06

I have a Winchester 30-06 stainless sporter with control feed I haven't used in years. I have changed my mind on a purchase of a 257 weatherby mag. And was wondering if modifying the 30-06 to 25-06 was a cost effective, and accuracy improved way of gaining a 25 caliber rifle. I do have a 30 caliber magnum. So I don't need the 30-06 any more.

The 25-06 will shoot with a flatter trajectory. The cost of conversion is dependent on which barrel you buy and who you have put it on.

So it is only the barrel that needs replacing? What would be a reasonable cost for a SS barrel and install. What make?

A good custom SS barrel blank will run you in the neighborhood of $300.00 or more depending on length, and diameter...
Lots of good makers, but that would be your call.... Bartlein, Kreiger, Lilja, Pac-Nor, to name a few.....
The old 30/06 will work with no other modifications needed....
$150.00 or more ball park to have it installed....

    NOSLEEP,

"And was wondering if modifying the 30-06 to 25-06 was a cost effective..."

Sure it is. Besides that, you're getting a much better barrel than you got from the factory in the first place as long as you stay with the better makers. Do Not be seduced by the inexpensive, bottom of the heap manufacturers. If the price is cheap, so is the barrel, especially if you're looking for accuracy.

Many of the barrel makers in the list below will install, chamber and finish their barrel for you rather than you having to send the barrel and your rifle off to another gunsmith for installation. This saves time and shipping costs.

If you intend to keep the same stock, you should ask about matching the barrel contour of the original barrel. Many of the larger barrel makers already have a program written for this, you just have to ask.

    Barrels

    Shilen Barrels
    Hart Rifle Barrels
    Lilja Barrels
    Pac-Nor Barrels
    Krieger Barrels
    Lothar Walther Barrels
    Spencer Rifle Barrels
    Broughton Rifle Barrels
    Douglas Barrels
    Bullberry Barrel Works
    Blackstar Barrels
    Schneider Barrels
    Wiseman Barrels
    Lawton Rifle Barrels
Classic Barrels and Gunworks-Dan Pedersen Cut Rifled Barrels
    Benchmark Barrels
    Gaillard Barrels
    E.R. Shaw Barrels
    Badger Barrels
    Border Barrels
    Montana Rifleman Barrels
    VanHorn Barrels

    Best.

    ADDED:

I just noticed that you are a Canadian. If you have a hard time locating the American barrels up there, Gaillard Barrels is a Canadian barrel maker.

    Best.

    Hart +1

I believe Jim Hart does the work and rebarrel is ~$650. That is new ss bbl to your desired contour, chambered and fit to your receiver. A few more $ and get it bedded.

My experience with these folks is that they are first rate.

I did that on a Remington 700 but I used a Remington Mountain rifle stainless barrel that the 'smith had in his shop. I never had a better shooter. I carried it to the plains of Montana and made some shots that I couldn't believe.
